Transporting my brew...

Post by phildodd » Thu May 14, 2009 8:27 pm

So I want to take some of my next brew to a couple of parties. The brew is currently fermenting and should be ready by mid next week. There are a few questions I have as I'm a bit of a (read: total) n00b, so bare with me.

1. I was thinking of bottling it, in 10 or so 2L PET bottles. Any problems with this idea? The trouble is I only have one bucket with no tap so bottling might be a nightmare. Which brings me on to...

2. Priming the bottles. As said before, I have no second bucket to use for bottling, so can't mix the priming sugars in that way. The milestone instructions say to just make up the priming solution, let it cool then stif it into the beer. Then start siphoning into the bottles. Does this sound right?

3. Would the 'cubitainers' on this page be something I could use? How does that work then?

Cheers a million!

I don;t have a tap on either of my FVs ATM. For bottling I just use my basic syphon with a bottling stick stuck in the end. For priming you could either dry prime (put the sugar straight into the bottle) or you could dissolve the sugar in water and use either a syringe or a pipette to measure the correct amount into the bottle.

I bought some really cheap small funnels from Tesco £1.50 which I use to dry prime my bottles. "dry prime", did I just make up a new catchy buzzphrase?

Yes a small funnel is virtually essential to ensure the sugar gets down past the neck without sticking to it.

Or you can even make a cone out of paper and snip the end of for a cheap way of getting the sugar in the bottles. That's what I've used in the past. If you bottle often though it might be worth while spending the money on a funnel. :D
