DISSOLVING DSM
DISSOLVING DSM
Does anyone out there have a good way of dissolving SDM without leaving small lumps in the wort ? The last time I tried I put all the ingredients in the FV before the water BIG NO NO what a mess
. So any sugestions would be greatfull.

Re: DISSOLVING DSM
I heated it up in a pot once but it left quite a lot on the sides of the pan. I mix for a few minutes and most of the clumps go. The ones that are left dissolve over time - I've never had a problem.
Re: DISSOLVING DSM
I dissolve the extract in a kettle of water, add another kettle to the f.v, then slowly add the spraymalt, stirring frantically with the stirrer, all gone fine so far. Best idea to add powder to water, not the other way round.
Re: DISSOLVING DSM
I just get a pan of boiling water and add the packet a bit at a time always stirring. Always seems to get the lumps out.
Worst part for me is when i pour from the pack sometimes the steam from the pan makes the edges of the pack fuzzy with moist DSM :s

I find that holding the packet upside down between the palms of your hands like you're praying and rubbing gets these bits out.Hoppkins wrote: Worst part for me is when i pour from the pack sometimes the steam from the pan makes the edges of the pack fuzzy with moist DSM :s
Licking them off works well too.

Sorry Chris, If I got it a tad wrong, I was thinking SPRAY DRIED MALT (SDM) . It's all to do with the brain cells you know the older you get then soaking them in some these wonderful brews ,well what can I say

Re: DISSOLVING DSM
Now Chris, I'm but a poor OLDish YORKSHIRE lad who' just getting back into brewing and theres some things you mentioned sound very painfull to meChris-x1 wrote:I only point it out because people tend to pick up on these things and they get into circulation causing confusion. There's already confusion with DME being confused with diastatic malt extract which should technically be refered to as DMS, diastatic malt syrup (as that's how its sold), but this could be confused with dimethyl sulfide, also refered to as DMS. It may be easier to refer to dried malt extract as spray malt (which refers to the drying process) although it can also be band dried so DME isn't necessarily always technically spray malt either...see what I mean![]()

But I won't be deterred I wil do my best to get the correct accronyms and if by chance I do get it wrong you will have except my most sincere apologies
