Exploding Wherry Worry

Post by Derbybrewer » Tue Dec 15, 2009 9:07 pm

Blody hell I just heard a bang in the back room where I store my bottled beer. When I went through there was glass all over the floor and beer all up the walls :D

This is a Woodfordes Wherry kit and it said that if the first fermetation stops bubbling (after 4-6 days) get bottling, so I did.

I just cracked another to see if it was a one off and it went off like Lewis Hamilton on the podium at SIlverstone!

These are my questions.

1. Are these bottles buggered now as I've clearly bottled them too early?
2. Should I get them out of the house - are more likely to go pop?

Any other advice appreciated as I feel like I've got tnt about to go off now

Thanks in advance.

seconded. get em (carefully) into the cold. once they're well chilled you could try carefully opening them to release the CO2 buildup, then recap them. Fingers crossed [-o<

Thanks lads, how long should I leave them alone in the cold for before attempting a recap?

Why has this happened and should I be looking to get lower than 1.006 on thr hydrometer? I just bottled 40 more muntons at 1015 on the advice of some local experts...is this lot going the same way?

for a two can kit, anything below 1015 is an acceptable FG. The important thing for next time is to have two or three days identical gravity readings before bottling, which I assume is why the wherry went bang. :)

and if they're that volatile I'd leave em at least 24 hours to get em properly cold.

Ok, so just to clarify, the latest lot at 1015 is probably ok to stay indoors. I sh*t myself carrying it out :? .

The lot outside can be handled after 24 hours and then I should release the pressure and recap and leave for how long?

I appreciate this but I'm a bit sad that I'll be in Morrisons beer aisle instead of supping me own broth

when you go to open them I'd still handle with care, as they might still be lively. Once recapped they should be alright at room temperature for a couple of days to make sure they recarbonate a bit, then somewhere cool to mature for a few weeks before supping. hopefully it'll turn out okay. :)

Just out of interest, what type of bottle did you use for this lively Wherry? Was it a recycled shop beer or a bottle from your local HBS? I'm asking because I've overprimed a batch of TC and a little worried that my bottle caps have bulged somewhat(!)

Good question...Wychwood bottles (hobgoblin). Absolutely useless as it is a nightmare trying to get the caps on with a standard capper. Won't be using them again!
