Just wondering if anyone had made a 1 can kit up with only half the water and so extra sugar. Would quite like a few different types of beer on the cupboard but as it's only me who drinks it i dont want 5 gallons. If i make up 1 ca with only 11.5 litres of water and nothing else would that work or would it come out with uneven flavours as they intended it to be. was thinking coopers stout for the first one if it would work.
Cheers

Re: using 1 can kit to make 2.5 gallons
Hi!
I cant make any recomendations about trying this with the Coopers stout kit... you are probably best making this up and bottling (search the forum for 'ditchs stout') so it will last as long as it takes you to drink it...
That said I have tried this successfully using a Coopers Draught kit ( basically a amber hoppy lager) this was made with the kit, 500g Ligh Dried MAlt extract to 12.5 litres and I used Saflager S-23 to ferment it
This gave me 12.5litres of 6.2% strong hoppy lager - almost a well hopped light bock to the taste...
Its turned out well but will need to be matured for a while (2-3 months) to get the best out of it....
I would bear the following in mind - you will need to add some simple sugar or malt extract to aid fermentation and I would try using more water than 11.5 litres.
With the stout I'd think because of the bitterness (measured in IBU's) you'd need to make the brewlength at least 15-18l with 500g DME and some sugar
Coopers provide the IBUs for their kits on their website:
From the IBU's for the kit you can work out the approx.bitterness of a brew according to how much water you add - see the FAQ section about ' Quoted IBU figures seem high'
Hope this help...
Good luck with your experiment

Re: using 1 can kit to make 2.5 gallons
The flavours will certainly be less balanced than they were intended to be as you'll have double the hop concentration so if you do brew it like that then i hope you really like hops. I'd suggest a better method for producing small quantities would be to make the beers of the world series of kits. They're fairly expensive for the volume (10 litres) but they're the best kits i've done so far and they come with a hop teabag and a grain tea bag.

I know that Brupaks do a line called "beers of the world". These only make 10 litres of beer. They are designed for the 'brubox' but you could do them in a normal vessel.
check out this link for info on the brew box and the flavours that come with it...
