COOPERS (DITCH'S) STOUT FG

Post by trucker5774 » Thu Feb 11, 2010 9:56 am

Can someone please tell me what the normal FG is for Coopers stout made up to Ditch's recipe with 1kg of spray malt. My OG was 1042. It took of like a missile but I was expecting lower than 1012

Not quite Ditches recipe but I recently did a coopers with 500g brewing sugar and 500g dark spraymalt, this finished up at 1.010.

Mine didn't explode, although it pretty much brewed out in 4days, maybe it's something to do with having an airlock and leaving the FV lid fully snapped down.

I also use an airlock and closed lid (always have) This brew has got to this stage on Wednesday morning....yeast pitched Saturday night. I have other brews ferment this quickly. I have only done 2 kits in the last year or so, as I normally only brew AG. I am not worried what the FG is, even at this it will be around 4% ABV. I will do all the usual stuff and give it a few days before moving on.

Ditch, if you tune in give me your thoughts, mate.I know you don't normally bother with gravity readings. Does it normally have a sulphur smell?

Gave up after 8 days as it was constantly 1.014. Bit concerned that with prming the bottles might have an accident, but I used the brew-belt, and roused the yeast, but alas could get no further.

Dunno, John. Sorry!

This is it, with me, see? I don't care, so I don't bother my head about it. No Hydrometers. No looking. No sniffing. In fact, I just passed by my room and saw the two FV's in there. Thought to myself, " I'll have those out presently. Long as they're not vinegar, tickedy boo. "

And that's about my only criteria. When I come to transfer to kegs, I get a taste. If that taste doesn't cause me to spit and groan? That'll do for me. Then I drink my beer.

But, I really wouldn't know what it smells like or what ever. I don't take any notice.

Why not try a sip?

I have already had a mini taste. Tastes better than it smells!. Odd smells are nothing unusual, I was just wondering if you had noticed any regular smell when you transfer it. As we have discussed before, neither of us is a beer snob.............you like it or you don't. Same goes for wine in my book. On my AG brews I do brew to my taste rather than trying to achieve a perfect copy. I reckon it will be starting down my neck in about 2 weeks :D

Day 11 final SG was 1.011 for my Coopers Stout kit made with 1KG of medium dry spray malt to 22L using Ditch’s recipe. A wonderful winter brew.

It looks like mine has finished then. I did rouse it with no effect, so I will let it sit a few more days before bottling/barrelling. I imagine it would have been down to between 1004 and 1010 if it had been made with sugar. Looking forward to seeing how it compares to my all grain brew :D

The ones I've done have finished between 1010 and 1014 and have all tasted great so I don't think it makes a difference. I would do it the way Ditch does but I love tinkering and checking my brews! :=P

I really must get another one on, I always use a kg of dsm, either dark or medium depending what I've got around.
