Coopers IPA- Late starter??

Post by Deneeve » Sun Jan 31, 2010 2:47 am

Coopers IPA -seems late to start as i put it in the fv friday afternoon and expected the usual scene in the morning- frothy top,fv lid nicely bulging etc. etc.. but nothing....bearing in mind i use an heat belt so i started wondering had i killed my yeast, as, when i rehydrated it the water was hotter than i realised and the yeast smelled quite strong,- it wasnt boiling hot but it was hotter than i realised...have i messed up???
Now it seems to have started doing it's thing (since i had a sneaky peek) at about 7pm saturday so i'm just wondering whats going on.
Whilst it seems to be happening i'll leave it be but for future reference-

Is it ok to add more yeast and how do you do it- do you stir it in or just sprinkle it on top?? and how much? a full sachet??

Thanks in anticipation people. Cheers!! #-o [-o< D

Depending on how hot the water was, you may have killed some of the yeast, but if it's doing its thing, then some has survived and is working away. As far as I can see, there's no harm in adding another sachet of yeast. Aerate for a bit if you didn't on Sat.

Thanks for that Cheshire, but, touchwood it seems fine now and is frothing away- loads of the brown scum above the level and all over the fv lid which is nicely swelled up :D Thanks again, cheers D

Just one other thing...if some of the yeast was killed will that affect the strength of the brew when its finished? :?:

Hi,

Yeast multiply rapidly so it will not have any affect apart from taking slightly longer to brew.

As Scottmoss said, no affect on strength.

Thanks for that....much appreciated =D>

While we're on the subject of yeast, does it make any differance rehydrating it or should i just sprinkle it onto the wort in future??
Thanks again Cheers D :D

If you have the time, make a yeast starter (more info here)
So the yeast is raring to go when pitched, otherwise sprinkling it in isn't so bad.

Hi all - good luck with brewing the IPA. I'm thinking of one for my next brew - any thoughts on a good kit? Any experience with the coopers, what were the results like? Would it be a good idea to make any one can kit up with plenty of LME instead of BKE or glucose? Any thoughts on dry hopping the hell out of this kit to get a truer IPA taste?

I've always really liked the Coopers IPA. Not particularly high in strength, but then I prefer a more sedate session IPA than leg wobbling pints.

I've brewed a few of these kits and found them easy going and with a nice strong hoppy profile. Great aroma too. I have experimented with the kit, shortening the brew length so that it would all fit into my corny for example, using LME instead of white sugar, slightly upping the LME content for a stronger pint and to see what happened to the body of it etc etc.

Finally, the IPA kit really helped me focus in on what I wanted to achieve with my first AG attempt (hoppy aftertaste, quite bitter, good aroma) and I kind of used the coopers IPA as a benchmark. In my own v humble opinion, my AG is clearly a better brew of course!

Hi Guys,
sorry about the delay on this one .... it turned out really nice, strength wise-pretty mediocre, but a nice pint all the same.
Would definately try it again.
Cheers D.

how hoppy does it turn out ? I did the coopers bitter and it was bitter but not very hoppy ...no aroma really I made it up with 1kg LME it was ok but nothing special ... im fairly well stocked with hops so i want to up flavour a good bit...i presume its bitter enough so just needs some 30min hop tea and maybe some dry hopping to help it along...

it's ok for hoppiness, particularly aroma. You can always hop tea/dry hop it if you want to and modify it to your tastes
