School boy error!!

Post by scottmoss » Fri Feb 26, 2010 10:24 pm

Just started my St Peters Ruby Red and I thought I'd follow the instructions to the T, in this I didn't take note of the temperture before I pitched the yeast. Wasn't until I lifted the fermentor that I noticed it was stone cold, doh!!

Just wacked my brew belt on.

Idiot

tbh, anything below body temp (37 degrees) feels cold to touch. have you got a digital thermometer getting an exact liquid temp reading? you'll be surprised at the actual temperature of your brew!!

Just finished my last pint of st peters and i can tell you it aint a bad drop mate.

Ive got a pint of brewers choice best made up with 1kg of dsm in front of me and im not as keen as i have been with the st peters.

Good luck with the brew.

I've only got one of those stick on jobs that's on the side of the fermentor, only starts at 18c and it's not even at that.

I know they are not completly accurate but it's not far off.

A friend of mine brewed it over Xmas and I helped him with a few pints and I thought it was really nice also.

Just having a pint of Fixby Gold and that's an excellent pint also!

Ive put an FV in the garage tonight. the stick on jobby said 12 the digital probe suspended within the wort was reading 16.5. Outside air temp and wort core temp seem to be VERY different! My thermometer is a very very cheap one from hong kong (look here) and took about 3 weeks to arrive but for the money i cant complain!

You only kill the yeast by over-heating. Just put the brew in a warm place to get it back to 20 degrees and it will kick off. Failing that re-hydrate a second sachet and pitch it in.

Hi,

I knew that the yeast would be ok when the temperture rises, i took a reading this morning and its at 1012 which i'm really happy with.

Thanks for the heads up on that thermometer, ordered one yesterday. Can't believe how cheap it is when postage is free and it comes from hong kong!

HI folks, I may be reading this wrong, but isn't this going to be a problem?:
Temperature range: -50â°C ~ + 70â°C (-58â°F ~ 158â°F)
Usage temperature: -10â°C ~ +50â°C (14â°F ~ 122â°F)
Might be ok for taking wort temperature (if you are very careful), and those lower readings ....

i just had a look at that thermometer as well!
the range should be ok for fermenting temps ......it just won't be universal within brewing hlt temp etc will need to be measured with something else! why not just get a decent one for a tenner in the first place

I only do kit brews at the moment so it should work perfectly for me.

Same here. I bought it to monitor fermenting temps which it seems to be doing very well (touch wood).

I have a habit of 'impulse buying'... ask my missus! I almost bought 3 of these before I thought I'd better read the spec

For less than €2 I think it's worth a punt! The batteries alone that come with it are worth that.
