Coopers dark magic.

Post by batey1963 » Wed Mar 03, 2010 10:36 pm

Just had a sneaky taste of my coopers dark that has been in the keg for 2 weeks. Wow! i think I have fallen in love yet again. Tastes a bit like hobgoblin only a little sweeter. 4 more weeks and then it can look out! If it gets any better with time then i will be one happy bunny. Just thought i'd share that with you after my first disasterous wherry brew.

Cheers everyone,
Martin.

Iv done the coopers dark many times and totally agree is an excellent pint. Iv done it with 1kg dark spray malt and also with 1kg brewing sugar. Both gave a good quality pint with the sm just edging it. Would recommend this kit to any1, a little over 11quid including ur sugar and its great value for money

Hi!

I've made Coopers Dark with a kilo of BKe and it was great... only one bottle left!

I'm planning to do some experimentation to see what fermentables are best....

I'm also toying with the idea of doing a dark lager using the the dark ale as a kit and making it to 24l and using S-23 yeast

:)
I'll report back....

bke is actually just spray dry malt extract and brewing sugar 50/50 split. so it works out cheaper to buy 500g of dme and use 500g of brew sugar!

I used 500 grammes of dark spray malt, 400 grammes of Demarera and 100 grammes of ordinary sugar. The latter because i ran out of demarera. Sounds like an interesting idea with the lager yeast. German dunkel brau is something else!

Hi!

KJ- point taken mate... Assuming you have a well stocked HBS within driving distance... When ordering online I have to make a BIG order to avoid an exessive postage charge as I live on an Island....

This island is in the Irish sea and there are 4 return ferries a day... Its not on the far side of the earth... lol
The local shop that sells Hb stuff only stocks BKE and its reasonably priced...

anyway rant over... lol

The Dunkel idea was given the nod from 'Frank' at Coopers when I emailed them to run my idea past them...

He told me he makes a dunkel lager using an original lager series kit and either a kilo of dark spray malt or a can of Dark liquid extract so he said using the dark ale kit would be fine... but doing it this way it would be a bit more bitter than the usual dunkels...
I'm a bit of a hop head so after a little 'dilution' this should be fine...
:)

Anyway I had a bulk order of dark ale kits so I have plenty to experiment with... :D

Hi!

I got the 'Dark Lager/Dunkel' experiment in the FV last night....

1 can Coopers Dark Ale Kit
1 Kilo Beer kit enhancer (yes, I know) :lol
500g LDME
35g Saaz hops steeped in 'french press' coffee maker for 30 mins
Brewferm Genuine lager yeast starter

Brew length 25 litres
OG: 1044
Pitched yeast at 20C at 19.30 10/03/10

By this morning the air lock was bubling away quite nicely... the temp had dropped to 16C

I anticipate that the temp will be below 15C by 19.00 tonight (so in ideal temp range within 24 hours)

I will post updates as we go!

Hi Martin,

No worries... I do have high hopes for this brew...:)

Nothing to do with 'cowardice' I'm sure... Sometimes youhave to be the pioneer, sometimes you can let other people lead the way...

I'm sure you'll enjoy the Coopers Dark, Its a great brew made as per the directions... Full malt (hints of coffee/chocoalte) taste with a good bitter finish and stragely refreshing with it...

I polished of almost the full 5 gallons by myself in a little over 6 weeks....
I liked it so much I jumped at the chance to buy 5 kits in a 'bulk buy' offer... worked out at £8 each... :)

Let us all know what you make of it when you try your first bottle... I 'sampled' a few after 10 days in the bottle- it was good but it does benefit from some further condidtioning...
:)
