Malt Extract Syrup - Any good for brewing?

Saw this in Julian Graves' yesterday, a jar of 340g i think it was. Could it be used instead of DME or am I barking up the wrong tree? :?:

Hi!

If it contains NO additives, you could use it... whether it works out any cheaper.... thats something you'll need to look into...

I use the Holland & Barrett stuff for making starters etc.

Manx Guy beat me to the link by one minute.
H&B jars of LME were used for brewing in the 1970s, so yes you can. Check there's no added cod liver oil, you don't want to get too healthy.
I keep a couple of jars for brewing novelty beers in one gallon quantities and using up odds and ends of grain and hops. Use a demi-john for the FV. The last one was a parsnip stout. It's, shall I say, an 'interesting' drink.
Last time I looked, H&B had a buy one, get second half price offer on all stock.

I do 10 litre brews with 2 jars of H&B malt extract, 1/2 kilo of spraymalt and 100 grams of crystal malt, the last one I did I hopped EKG ans Aurora and it turned out really nice.

It looks a bit thinner than normal tinned LME. I'm planning on mixing with DME too. What OG & FG did you get with the 10L brew crafty john - just to get in the right area for ABV.

This is interesting indeed because I used to use this when I did brews 15 years ago and had completely forgot about it. Thanks for the memory.

OG 1.045, FG 1.010, it's a cracking pint, I have a 10 litre keg which is perfect for my extract brews, if you want the recipe let me know.

I'd like the recipe please, crafty john.
I've got 5 gall ESB in the FV, so I could re-cycle some yeast from the bottom, do your 10l H&B brew and stick it into a polypin when finished, as a bit on the side so to speak.

I have used H&B malt in a few brews and none have ended with great results. Though I really need to split a brew into 2 and then brew it with and without the H&B malt to see whether it was the cause.

2 Jars H&B Malt Extract
500 gram Medium spraymalt
100 gram Crystal Malt
Bittering hops 20 gram EKG, 10 grams Aurora (60 minute boil)
100 gram crystal malt ( I just chucked it in with the bittering hops)
1/4 tsp Irish Moss (10 minutes before end of boil)
Aroma hops 20 gram Aurora (40 minute steep after the boil)
1 pack Brupaks ale yeast

Brew length 10litres. I started wit 11 litres in the boil and ended up with just under 10 at the end, just top up to 10 litres.
I also used heading liquid before kegging. If you need any more info on the method just let me know as I am in a bit of a rush at the mo.

Cheers
John
