Hi folks. I've just decided to get back into homebrew. It's something of a tradition for myself and my best mate. Much to my wife's dismay.
I've just bought a new fermentation bucket and anciliaries, and of course it came with a kit. It's a Telford's Continental Pilsener. Has anyone had experience with this particular kit?
Is it worth using, or should i go to Wilko and get one of the coopers bavarian kits? I understand those are good.
There's no homebrew shop around here, so my choices are limited. I do know not to use the yeast from the packet without making a starter. I discovered the wide mouthed lucozade bottles are just the right size for making a starter, as they will take a bung and airlock!
Any tips? I haven't brewed for a couple of years.. the last attempt was a munton's kit that, for some reason, went .... lumpy.. for lack of a better word.
Smelled OK, tasted OK, but... well.. i was after beer not soup!
Thanks
Max
Telford's kits.
I often wonder about this. Would it be wiser to put the dme in, then mix that up with some boiled water, then the kit, then more water? Or just put the kit and the dme in at the same time and mix that up with the boiled water all at once?
For the first time, i have a proper beer paddle, so my prime method of mixing isn't sloshing the tub around a lot
I didn't know Telford's was Muntons. Good to know!
My mate is a stoic lager drinker. I was going to try fermenting it with some lager yeast. Will this be OK to use with this kit? I've read lots about sulphrous compounds that need to be conditioned out. I'm planning on Keg conditioning, which i know is not reccomended... but i don't really have the space or time for the bottles...
I bought Safale's lager yeast, since i couldn't find any of the "smack packs" or liquid vials i've read so much about.
Ta,
Max

in terms of conditioning/lagering storage, i'm fortunate enough to have a garage.
A sealed barrel in there will sit at around 5-10c tops this time of year, and i an fit a beersphere or the like in there.
The bottles will take up more space than i care to give up, and the last time i did it it took me hours to get everything clean and sterile.
I'm a bit lazy, to boot.
I understand the barrel pressure is too low for proper carbonation.
Would i be better advised to just make a pilsener and not lager it?
Or am i talking wet?

Is that the one with the little 8 gram co2 capsules?
It sounds like a reasonable method, i have to say. That way i can just bottle what i need, i imagine.
Is it worth my while getting one of those "Better Bottles" from easybrew.co.uk? If i'm going to order up spraymalt, i might as well save on postage, eh? They're only a tenner or something. A glass carboy would be what 20 quid?
