Brupak Brewers Choice No Boil Dried Kit

Post by Simon7 » Fri Aug 13, 2010 8:44 pm

Anyone done any of the above range?

What's the deal with them, are they just like tinned kits but dry?

Do you need to add fermentables or is it all in there?

I've done about 20 kits and was browsing Thrifty Shopper looking for my next kits and came across this

http://www.thethriftyshopper.co.uk/brew ... Pints.aspx

but would like to hear a bit more about them than the site and Brupaks own site tell you

Any help, advice or accounts of experiences appreciated 8)

these kits have been available for a while now - doing a search should reveal some info on them here. They've just be re-labelled as brupak now do a similar AG range which require boiling and these particular kits dont.

I've done a few myself before going onto extract and AG. They are OK - I'd say a little better than tinned kits in that you can select your own additions (dry malt or liquid) to alter the end product. They are more intereesting to do than normal kits in that you still have to boil the hop bags and also mix up the DME from the kit so you get more involved in the process compared to just dumping the tins in.

I've done two of these Brewers Choice dry kits (the Trad IPA and 80 Shilling). I mainly do 2 can kits so when the IPA worked out more expensive than my usual 2 can brews I had high hopes for it, especially because some of my best brews have been Brupaks 2 can kits. To be honest both the IPA and 80 Shilling were two of the worst kits I've ever done, both I made up to only 20l and used the dried malt extract option 2. Both kits were thin and lacked any depth of flavour, the IPA was the biggest disappointment, little if any hop character at all, nothing but a sickly sweet taste but relatively strong in alcohol, a bit like drinking sweet white wine that had been diluted 2 fold :-& I'd even go as far as saying that all my one can brews have come out better than these two.
They were also the first two kits I tipped down the sink after hitting the 12-16 week mark in kegs and them still tasting really bland as I really wanted to free up my kegs with some decent beer. They seem to be held in high regard in general so maybe I was unlucky :-?

Still highly recommend Brupaks' 2 can range though, although I think the Muntons Premium Gold 3.6Kg kits are the best beer kits on the market.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Think I'll have a bash at one of the Muntons kits next up then, have only done one 'two can' kit so far (Wherry) =D>

A tip for the 2 can kits is to add a teaspoon of Youngs yeast nutrient when mixing the wort just before the addition of the yeast and you should avoid the notorious 1.020 stick that many people experience with 2 can kits.

If you enjoyed the Wherry then I heartily recommend the Smugglers Gold should you decide to get a Muntons kit, best home brew kit I've ever done.

I have done several of these kits, the bitter kit I have found to be really good :D apart from the last one which was brewed using option 3,the 1.5KG Brupaks LME.This has been in the keg for about 8 weeks now and it tastes like barlfire says about his IPA  .Think I might put this back in a FV and pitch some more yeast just to see if it might ferment out a bit more,if not its going down the drain,to date my most expensive kit and worst kit so far.It wont put me off doing more of these kits but I will deffo stick to using DME in future.
