Going back to my original issue - in the end I left it in the front room where the ambient temperature was about 18.5 for a further 3 days, then moved it to the back room which by this point was in the 16s for a further 4 days, this was unintentional as I had meant to put it in the pressure barrel right away but the demands of a one month old baby rather limited my free time! Finally got it in to the pb yesterday, had a quick taste and I think it's going to be a good un.
For the future I've now got a hagen 50w aquarium heater which I will be putting straight into the beer.
It's been a really useful thread this, thanks to everyone who has contributed, I've learnt a lot.
It's gone a bit chilly!
