Looking for a nice Golden Ale

Post by stapes » Fri Nov 12, 2010 2:23 pm

I am new to this and have only completed a few beer kits; I am looking to brew a nice Golden in colour Ale. I am looking for a beer that is in between a Lager and Ale that will make me go wow. I also want it ready for Christmas Day!! Must be very Golden in Colour as the people I have coming around for Christmas Dinner are Lager drinkers, I want to show them that a nice Ale is Just as good (well I know its better) Any recommendations?

Thanks
Mark

I havent tried it yet but its on me list, but Woodfordes Great Eastern Golden Ale is probably what you are looking for:-

A golden, pale beer made with a blend of pale and lager malts, appealing to lager and bitter drinkers alike. Highly acclaimed as the benchmark for the new breed of straw-coloured 'global' beers.

The blend of pale and lager malts brings an initial light maltiness that complements the fruity bitterness of English hops. Inherent sweetness, with a long, malty finish.

Its certainly one to do for next summer for me. And I think you may convert your lager chums!

As a down point though, its a two can kit, so I am not sure if it will be ready for Chrimbo!!

Fermenting:-
FV 1 - Festival Spiced Winter Ale
FV 2 - Empty
FV 3 - Empty
FV 4 - Ditches Stout

Drinking:-
Keg 1 - Nothing

Conditioning:-

Bottles - Brewferm Winter Ale
Bottles - Brewferm Triple

Next
Work in progress
Old Tin of Coopers Cerveza
Couple of old tins of stuff to experiment with!

Thanks

But I have already done a Great Eastern Golden Ale, its was a very nice pint of ale. My was still quite dark and nowhere near the colour shown on the kit, this may be due to the fact that it not left that long before i got struck in to it.

I was thinking of the gold EDME Kit having looked around on the internet?? Anyone done this kit?

Coopers Australian Pale Ale + 1kg of light DME + 40g of hops stewed in the tin of boiling hot water for 20-30 mins = Excellent pint.
I'm sure it will convert your friends not only to real ales, but they probably wont belive you brewed it ;-)

As stated above, Woodfordes Great Eastern.
Excellent golden pint.
Took 4-5 weeks to clear 100% but well worth it, lovely taste.

Last two brew were woodfordes great eastern and coopers aussie pale ale with added challenger hops. I served both through the handpumps in my shed and the lads last sat night prefered the coopers , woodfordes was still a decent pint mind. Both good golden ales.

When I add hops, I generally put them in to a hessian bag and when I've emptied the malt extract out of the tin, I fill the tin with boiling water, add the 'hop teabag' and let it sit there for 20 minutes or so while I add everything else to the wort (DME, Sugars, Water, a good thrashing) then empty the tin of 'hop tea' in to the wort.
This adds subtle bittering, but lots of hop flavours. (I'm not keen on huge bittering) If you boil them, then you will get the bitterness.
If that is your aim, try looking at the Extract forum above this 1 to get a better idea of recipe.
