Fermenting bins query

Post by blue eyes » Thu Feb 24, 2011 5:31 pm

I always fit my lid on really tight and secure on my Fv,but I have read it should be loosely fitted instead, but would that cause air to get inside the bin?
I have started two Coopers kits yesterday and their lids are on firm, shall I loosen them off?

Feel free to hammer the lid on for the first twelve hours. If it makes ye feel better. But, once the yeast kicks in, CO2 is created and lays like an invisible mist on top of the wort. That keeps it safe

Coopers what ....? I do their Stout and, believe me; A tight lid over That stuff would create a Beer Bomb!

We used to chuck a damp towel over a bucket. Now people piss about with air locks 'n all sorts

Coopers Euro and Dark Ale.I have loosened the lids and there is a good amount of foaming on the top of both brews.Thought about going the airlock and bung in the Fv but too much arsing around drilling etc.The lids were tight for more than 12 hrs so I will c what results I get now loosened.I got the idea off the start of the forum pages, with the pics of the chap doing a kit brew.

I put the lid on tight on the first brew I did, which was a Coopers IPA, and it just blew it straight off. I now leave them slightly cracked and have had no problems. I don't bother with airlocks either. I'm sure there's a good reason for them, but I always open the lid to see how the yeast's doing anyway, so it would be a bit pointless.
