Coopers Brewmaster IPA kit - low S.G.?
Coopers Brewmaster IPA kit - low S.G.?
I have just set away an IPA kit and the SG was 1038 @ 24degC (corrected to 1039). Does this seem a bit low? I used 500g spray malt and 300g sugar as per instructions. Stirred for ages to make sure the malt/sugar dissolved before I added the cold water.
I was wondering if anyone on here had done one of these kits and could remember their FG? If it's around the 1016 mark I may have to add some more sugar or be drinking 2.7% brew!
thanks in advance

ive got one in the fermenter atm with 1kg DME and 1kg of maris otter and that came out at 1.052 as i recall
its down to 1.014 atm

Re: Coopers Brewmaster IPA kit - low S.G.?
I brewed the kit to 38 pints with a Geordie 1kg BKE and the initial gravity was 1052 at 22 degrees running down to 1008 at the end.....its now sinking delicioulsly down my neck!....and it bubbled like Versuvius.....
Sorry to sound smug but it sounds like you could have added more fermentables....perhaps around 1kg or reduced the added water............

Given the fermentables that you added 1038 doesn't sound too far from what I would expect. Let it ferment. See what you get at the end and then drink it.andyswallet wrote:I have just set away an IPA kit and the SG was 1038 @ 24degC (corrected to 1039). Does this seem a bit low? If all you are worried about is the alcohol content then you have the whole homebrew concept a bit arse backwards.
I buy from The Malt Miller

Andy, that OG sounds about right for the amount of fermentables you added. While I'm sure it's a nice drop, it won't have the alcoholic kick that an authentic IPA will have. Coopers even provide a recipe on their website to make it more authentic.andyswallet wrote:I have just set away an IPA kit and the SG was 1038 @ 24degC (corrected to 1039). Does this seem a bit low? Don't stress it, I bet it will be fantastic. I'd say your FG will be a lot lower than 1.016.

Right, I'm going to let this run without adding any more fermentables. Will post back with FG.
thanks for all the replies!

OG seems within normal - presuming you had 1.5kg can of extract + 500g dme and 300g sugar

That was my problem with my current brew - got aroung 1040 when I was expecting about 1060. Found a recipe for 'Authentic IPA' calling for 1kg DME & 500gm Dextrose I quickly upped my DME & chucked in some extra sugar & the OG then came out at 1058. FV before racking into secondary was 1007. It is already looking good but the ABV is going to be around the 7.3% mark!

Cheers!!
