I know it's early days but.........

Post by Monkeybrew » Fri Apr 22, 2011 4:42 pm

My Munton's Midas Touch has been in the FV for 6 days now, and I dropped my hydrometer into the wort on day 4 once the intial fermentation had settled down.

The reading on day 4 was 1020, and now 2 days later it's still reading 1020 :?

There still seems to be activity in the FV, question is, should I give it a gentle stir, or just leave it alone for a few more days?

Hi Monkeybrew

I'd just leave it to do its stuff. If its still got some activity then its hasnt stuck. Your hydrometer may have bubbles keeping it up, so it may look higher than it actually is. Maybe spin the Hydrometer to see if it then shows a different gravity. I would just try to keep a steady temperature, I use 20c. And leave it to finish.

Cheers normski

It's like baking a cake, it never rises when you stand and watch it cook.

Brewing just produces a better end product

Lol, I did leave it for 2 days, even took the hydrometer out.

I checked it this morning on day 10 and it was still on 1016, so I gave it a gentle stir with a sterilised spoon.

It looks darker than I was expecting, but it always does when its in the FV.

Id be tempted to chuck in a spoon or 2 of tronozymol, and warm it up a bit!

might just get it down another point or 2 before you bottle/keg it!

I've googled it and see that it's a yeast nutrient, how much would I need, as Im off to my LHBS at lunchtime today and might give it a whirl?

I have banned myself from using it after I took a taste once! It was like ammonia, and my point of homebrew is to make additive/chemical free beer. So I now stir if its stuck and after 2 - 3 weeks, bottle/keg when it wont drop anymore!! :D

Fermenting:-
FV 1 - Festival Spiced Winter Ale
FV 2 - Empty
FV 3 - Empty
FV 4 - Ditches Stout

Drinking:-
Keg 1 - Nothing

Conditioning:-

Bottles - Brewferm Winter Ale
Bottles - Brewferm Triple

Next
Work in progress
Old Tin of Coopers Cerveza
Couple of old tins of stuff to experiment with!

I never made it to my LHBS in the end today, so I'm going to double check the SG again in the morning, and then bottle 10L (20 x 500ml) and keg the other 13L.

It will still come in around 4.5% ABV before secondary starts :)
