Using Washed Yeast With A Beer Kit

Post by Stu The Brew 2 » Sun Apr 22, 2012 10:30 am

Hi all.
I am after a bit of advice.
I have been brewing Coopers Larger for about 6 months and have it down to an art, however I pitch in 2 packets of Saflager s23 yeast in insted of the standard yeast that comes with the tin. This boosts the cost up considerably.
I have started reading up about washing yeast, which I must say I am quite interested in doing. The problem I have is using a yeast starter.
The posts I am reading about yeast washing say to use the yeast washed as a starter, but is this actualy possible with a beer kit? or can I just used the washed yeast as part of the full amount of piching yeast?
HELP Please :?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Hi

Wash the yeast from your previous batch and pitch (the correct ammount) into your next kit.

No starter required :D

Thanks gnutz2.
How do I know what the correct ammount is?
Do I literally use the ammount from the first batch for the full ammount of the next? or will I need to top it up.

well most sachets have 11g of yeast dried, id imagine a shots worth of washed yeast would be the same quantity, however could it really harm to use more?

I'd wash the yeast, and split it into 2 or 4 jars for storage.
When it comes time to use it let it come to room temp so as not to shock it. Pour off most of the excess liquid from the top of one of the jars, mix the yeast up with the rest so you can pour it, and chuck it in to the batch.

I normally do the same as McAce, pour into 2 jars and maybe pitch half of a jar, for me this usually works out about 200ml of yeast.

Pitching the right ammount is just an educated guess, generally the higher the og and the older the yeast is the more you need to pitch.

Remember to keep everything super clean, I boil the jars and sanitise the lip of the FV before I pour the yeast
