Hate to ever think of anyone slinging five gallons. At least it only cost me a pint!
Fair advice. My first stab at adding treacle was an educated guess - one of our local breweries here does a treacle stout, which is a thing of beauty! Though I have to admit that I never tried a Cooper's Stout 'as is'; my first brew was your recipe!

Kind of wished I read this about 4 hours ago as I put my coopers dark ale on earlier which I made up of 1kg molasses sugar and 1 tin (454g) black treacle...bad idea???the OG was 1044 so it's heading to be quite a strong pint..have I messed up by adding the type of sugars I have??

ach, don't worry about it markle, it will turn out fine. I think the fermentation process will sort out the treacle, ditch was talking about just shoving a teaspoon of unfermented treacle into a pint of stout...i can see why he didnt enjoy it. Besides, if you've already done it...chuff all you can do about it now, just hold tight and hope for the best mate ;)

A lovely pint, a bit like Newcastle Brown I think.

I used this as a base for my Christmas ale and it was a belter.

Must do it again in the autumn.

I made a 12L Brewferm Old Bruin kit with 500g of dark candi sugar and a 454g tin of black treacle and it turned out really nice with a great liquorice flavour :D

It was so good that I will be making some more this year, and a work collegue even offered to buy a whole batch off of me, not that I would because I'm sure that it's highly illegal

I'm just replying so it's easier to find this thread when I come to brew my Dark Ale in a few weeks! Some interesting suggestions to think about. I was tinkering with the idea of using a little black treacle but as Ditch suggests, probably best to try as intended first. Might do half and half for a taste test. Cheers

I bottled one of these last week after it had been in the fermenting bucket for 4 weeks. The sample I tried from the bucket tasted great and it has almost cleared after only 5 days in the bottle.

I just bottled my coopers dark ale last night. I used their brew enhancer two and I can't complain, it tastes great.
