Cocked me dates up, HELP

Post by DrDaz » Thu May 31, 2012 10:25 pm

A couple of weeks ago I put a Woodfordes Wherry on. It's just about ready for kegging or bottling. However, I'm away for the next week and won't get time to bottle it before I go. I don't want to put it in a keg because I won't be around to release the pressure in the keg that builds up after a few days.

I'm wondering if I could rack it off the yeast cake into a secondary and leave it for the week until I get back.

I can keep it in the garage where it's fairly cool with the lid snapped on.

Do you think it will be ok?

I think so long as it's sealed with an airlock it should be fine. I've left ale in the fv for a few weeks due to necessity before, worried at the time but it didn't cause any problems (actually, made for clearer beer).

To be honest, you don't even need an airlock. Just crack the lid and leave it, CO2 will protect it. I left a wherry 4 weeks in the main fv once and it was fine. Dont rack it off, you only risk introducing infection. Never undestand people racking off beer in to a "bottling bucket" - not needed in the slightest and increases the risk of spoiling your beer.

If your FV is air tight and fitted with an airlock, it should be fine. I recently fermented a beer for 6 weeks in primary then kegged from there. Came out as usual.

Plenty of brewers leave their beer in the primary for a month or two with no ill effects.
If you're really worried you could post your address and where you hide your spare key, I'm sure someone out there would be willing to pop in and keep an eye on it for you. :)
I'm just here for the beer.

Had a brew that's ready. Got a keg for it, and was hoping would be ready to go to put the btw in last night. Since first time using, I'd ordered new deals for it, but the 4" O ring hadn't arrived. So, thought would try with the one it had when I got it (donated to me)..put some water in, pressured it up, and could hear hissing from it.

Didn't wanna just leave it, so decided to just bottle it this afternoon... Also give it time to carbonate :) just meant I had missus moaning art me, as was fine for 1.5 hours... But she's always moaning, hehe

Just didn't manage to get a brew on the ferment whilst was away as I was hoping to...
