Coopers Heritage Pilsner (update)

Post by big brew ejit » Sun Jun 10, 2012 4:29 pm

I did a Pilsner kit this morning as per the instructions and got a reading of 1040 at 22 c.
Has anyone done one recently and what's opinion on it.
I dissolved the light spraymalt in the boiling water first but still have a fine layer at the bottom of the fv has this happened to any one else?
Cheers
Phil

Hi,

I did this kit over 3 months ago, i still have a fair few bottles of it and it just doesn't taste right. I know a lot of others have great success with this one so I have no idea what went wrong. Back when I did it it was fairly cold, around 18c I think and i made it as per instructions, dme and dextrose.

I think i did have a thick layer at the bottom pretty quickly, too quickly for it mot be the yeast getting going. I am sure it will be fine.

Hope yours turns out better than mine!

Made this Coopers Pilsener a few times, the kit yeast in the white packet is a true lager yeast so it should have a cooler fermentation than the ale yeast. Results is a nice Saaz hop aroma(Stella like) with the kit yeast, even made it up once with a leftover coopers ale yeast packet in the summer at warmer fermentation temps and it turned out fine.

I did this kit through the winter. Kept it cold sometimes down to 12 degrees and brewed it very slowly. Managed to keep it around 15-18 degrees most of the time by moving it around. Took 3-4 weeks to ferment. After about 6-8 weeks in bottles it tasted good, slightly odd prior to that and got even better over time after that. Although I have only done this once, from my research I believe the key is low brewing temperature.
Highly Recommended.

I recently brewed this kit, using beer enhancer 1, and kept the temp quite low (15 degrees). It took a couple of weeks to ferment and has now been in the bottle for 3 weeks. Tasted a bottle after a week, just to see how it was going- OK. After another couple of weeks it's improved quite a bit and has a good crisp taste. It's the first Lager I've made ( usually drink Ale), but thought it would be nice to have something cold for the long, hot Summer days- in retrospect, perhaps a Winter Warmer would have been more appropriate ha,ha,ha.

Thanks lads for the replies, have managed to keep the temp below 20 c most of the time. Have had to move it around into different rooms cos when we got a hot spell the kitchen would heat up over 20c. The only prob I had was the little bit of undissolved spray malt so hoping doesn't come out go weak.
Still fermenting 7 days later so a few days yet before its bottled.

Just conditioned the Pilsner for the last 2 weeks and put it into the garage earlier on.
I put a pint btl in the fridge with the plastic 330ml bottle that I filled so I could test if secondary fermentation was progressing which it seemed to be.
Just opened the plastic bottle and no hiss but decided to open the pint and when I slipped the cap a perfect hiss eased out and I felt good. Poured it out and had a nice head, clear as a bell and tasted good.
Just have to resist drinking it for a few weeks so I can let it improve.
After just 2 weeks its drinkable. Will be doing this one again.
