You wouldn't get this problem with an Edme Stout kit, eh Ditch? Much better kit than Coopers any day

Joke Ditch! I've noticed how you rave about Coopers Stout over Edme and you could well be right. I've started an Edme and will let you know how it goes. It was just a tease lad and I actually respect your opinion cos I think you've said you've tried them both and I haven't, so no I don't know what the f**k I'm saying....yet.

Okay, mate. Cool. I genuinely was just confused there.

Actually, I've never tried an " EDME Stout Kit ". But, back in the day, I used EDME LME's in my Extract inventions. Can't fault the stuff ~ or couldn't, back then.

Saying that; I was far more interested in making ridiculously strong concoctions, back then. Tasted barely better than liquid sh!t, I'd imagine. But, two litres and it was lights out  Seriously!

That was decades ago though. A lifetime. Now I make stuff that tastes grand. And I can sit here and guzzle eight pints and still see the key board well enough to rage and grab at and generally rip into people I feel have in any way attempted to get a piece of me.

Maybe I should just go back to the LME stuff and quietly implode by 18:00 ....? Image

All cool. I intend to try a Coopers, I hear they are both nice in different ways; Coopers has a more distinctive taste? Anyway, now I've hijacked the thread, can you give me your opinion on something? I've been brewing just 7 months and have enjoyed trying cheaper kits with added ingredients to get a nice brew. Made schoolboy errors on a few. My LHBS is selling off Findlandia lager and bitter kits for £7. It might be shite, you get what you pay for but some good reviews too. Have you tried this brand and what would you suggest adding to make it half decent. Don't say buy a decent two can kit; I might some time but like to experiment at mo. Cheers

Lager I wouldn't dare opine on. I've only tried one lager kit in my entire life. Complete f**king abortion!

'Finlandia Bitter'? Not entirely certain I've ever heard of them. But, again, why on earth would I ever go suggesting a two can kit? Not me, mate.

No. Trying to improve Any normal kit is a matter of Industry Standard procedure;

Ye simply throw their boll0x instructions on the fire. Then ye add a Kilogram of suitable Dried Malt Extract, in place of what ever sugar they'd have been preaching.

Then, ye don't make it up to five gallons. Ye make 20 Litres.

Then, ye drink it and see what ye think. That's the point at which to start wondering if a 'Hop Tea' or 'Some Crystal Malt' might improve it.

Personally? I'd just consider sugars first ~ after the DME and the 'Shortened Brew Length'. Taste a spoon of Muscavado. Compare it with Demerara. See which ye prefer. (Fact is, ye most likely already recognise the basic leanings of such sugars tastes, of course) But, that'll be a much easier way to steer ye beer than trying to fathom out whether Fuggles or Cascade hops might help.

See? Move very slowly. Read up on what others have already done. Think strawberries might improve ye beer? Fine. But, put a strawberry in a pint first. The pint glass is a far better ground for experimentation than the FV.

Now: Fly this thread to Cuba!!!

Cheers. When I say ingredients, I only meant DME and have put in a little black treacle and billingtons dark unrefined sugar, and yes I've brewed short to 20l. I've only tried one lager and that was Coopers Pils and not bad at all.

Don't get the fly to Cuba.

Yeppers. I hear good things about the Coopers lagers too. In fact, I rather fancy trying their Cerveza. Could be good on a long, hot, Friday night or when making the hay.

Only, this year? Looking forward to long, hot nights and even making hay; I'd might as well buy a pack of f**king three!

Cuba? Showing my age, I guess. Long, long before Al Queder and the Taliban were the terrorists on everyone's tongue. Before even the Baader Meinhoff lot. The complete nutter with a gun, on a planes destination of choice always appeared to be Cuba.

Hijacking. See ....? " Fly this plane to Cuba " was, in itself, virtually a national punch line. Anyway ..........

Image Funny thing is, mate; I've been getting that pretty much all my life! People saying I should write a book.

I'd happily give it a go too. But, I simply wouldn't know where to start, to be honest.

Oh well; Just have to keep on bringing my own inimitable style of complete and utter bollox to places like this, I guess?

Used to use those in the commercial kitchens when I cooked, they lash a large can out of it in seconds.
