white oily residue..infection?
folks have recently bottled a modified geordie mild with caragold and crystal, pioneer hops, northdown hops and liberty hops as a late addition. Water had been pre treated with campden. No issues throughout. However I am now noticing a white slightly oily residue on surface of brew. I've opened a bottle and dont notice any off smells, and a quick taste doesnt again seem off. Can anyone clue me in as to what this might be and whether its a chucker? any ideas appeciated

Just like trying new ideas!

Sort of answers it for me, if your happy then it's just a curiosity but pictures might help. Oily residues are usually hop oil but the white thing is unusual.

cheers orlando. must admit that i was a bit heavy on the pioneer and northdown 40 grams of both but only a half hour boil so perhaps thats a factor. Yeast was notty which i havent used before wondered if that might be a factor

a white ring around the top of your bottle is a classic sign of infection, and a bad one at that. If it tastes ok now i'd drink it quick as it will probably only get worse.
Re: white oily residue..infection?
I have had the white residue in the FV when I dry hop and assume its hop oil. But never in bottles, I hope!!
Cheers

thanks for replies guys. I think this one might just get demoted to back of man cave and forgotten about. At least its not a really pricey kit and malt and hops used were really just leftovers from previous brews

A white surface film sounds a bit like an acetobacter infection, except that it usually happens in the fermenter. The infection turns beer into vinegar but I'm not sure how it will behave in a sealed bottle, as I think it needs air to multiply.
Whatever it is, it's not normal so you'd probably be better off drinking the beer sooner rather than later (assuming it tastes nice!).

Re: white oily residue..infection?
Thanks for all the posts about this problem. I have decided that discretion is the better part of valour and consigned the whole batch to the great drip tray in the sky
The bottles that I was using were quite nice though ( 1 litre aldi cloudy lemonade glass) so theyve had a thorough rinsing and are now full with water and 1/2 tab Boots Baby bottle steriliser in each. Will leave for 24 hours shaking every now and then which will hopefully kill off any remaining nasties, then will neutralise with some sodium met solution. would anyone care to comment?
Off to drown my first (possible) infection blues with a pint that i know is ok!!

Nooooooo! Don't tip it away!
It won't do you any harm to drink it (well, no more harm than any beer does).
I'm not saying you should drink anything that tastes horrible but If it still tastes decent then drink it!
