Dealing with a massive krausen
Dealing with a massive krausen
I'm considering brewing up coopers Russian imperial stout recipe:

But I am concerned with dealing with the krausen. I normally use an airlock with my fv. Could I just leave the airlock out and stand the fv in a bucket to catch the escapee?

Re: Dealing with a massive krausen
you could, or if it has a sealed lid, just connect a "blow off" tube through the gommett into a jar

As already stated, a blow off tube would be best, easiest way to set one up, is to attach a plastic tube to your airlock and have the other end in a jar/bottle with water in it, likely with RIS you will get a blowout anyway, so you might need to swap the airlock/tube out for another while you clean the first.
The other option would be to make it to 20+litres as nornal and then divide it between two FVs i.e. do 10/11 ltrs in each and use half the pack of yeast in each one, leaving tons of room for expansion of krausen.

There's a thread on here for Coopers Imperial Stout with that recipe. I'm sure someone made a blow-off tube, think it worked, I just had the lid of at one side and let it go for the full blow. Had the fermenter stood in a tray (though it was in the bath for a day as the tray was only 1 inch deep). A bucket would work fine.

Re: Dealing with a massive krausen
Meant to say, I started mine off in a 7 gallon fermenter then racked off into the normal 5 gallon fermenter after the initial eruption. Would have needed a much bigger tray or paddling pool if i'd started in the 5 gallon fermenter.
Recipe makes a fantastic brew though.

Hi Dan,
With anything I'm expecting a huge blow off with, I place my FV in one of these:
http://www.tesco.com/direct/42l-flexi-t ... pageLevel=
Although It look likes they only supply in 3's at the moment, but you may be able to pick one up for a little over £2 in store. They can take a standard 5 gallon FV with tap with plenty of room and there is no way anything is going to fill that to floor ruining point
I think a 7 gallon would be okies living in there
Cheers,
Tim
