Hi all
I have just returned to the world of brewing after a break of about 2 years. I am only a kit brewer so far but who knows in the future. I was tempted back by finding some old stock in the shed (milestone crusader) which still tasted remarkably good if not better than when tasted early,which does give credence to "patience is a virtue".
I have started with another crusader and a fruit cider for the missus. I am however tempted by doing an authentic lager since i have been given an old caravan fridge which on its lowest setting stays at a steady 12 deg C but i can only get a 10 or 15 litre jerry can in,so i was wondering whether to use a 1 tin kit but without additional fermentables or just to halve a fully made up kit and do half in fridge, half in the shed, any help gratefully received?

Hi, I've never short brewed as far as 15l but often brew to 20l with pilsener. It might work, maybe you could just use dextrose and not add any l/dme.

cheers i have my mums old fridge freezer coming in a month or so (after i persuaded her she needed a new one) so space not gonna be an issue soon,tho may still give it a go in the small one first.Do you know which kits supply actual lager yeasts so i dont have to source additional yeast?cellone wrote:Hi, I've never short brewed as far as 15l but often brew to 20l with pilsener. Coopers Pilsener and European Lager both come with proper lager yeasts.

If you were to say that with a one can kit half of the fermentables are in the can and half are additional fermentables and 15 litres is about two thirds of the usual volume just use the one can and add half the additional fermentables you would with a full size brew. That gives you three quarters of the fermentables for three quarters of the brew size.

Thanks cellone gonna try the coopers pilsner and brew it in a fridge i have acquired and may even split it into 2 batches one in fridge one just in the shed and see if theres any difference may still have to buy another sachet of yeast to set both off tho.
