Saaz hops
Saaz hops
Just ordered 100g of saaz hops to tweak a can of coopers European lager and coopers Canadian blonde,my question is how much to use for each can and how long to boil or steep? I like a lager with alot of flavour, say like kronenberg.i am gonna make each can up with Muntons enhancer plus 250g of extra light spay malt but have bought Safale US-05 Yeast for the Canadian blonde.any tips or advice welcome

Re: Saaz hops
Saaz don't have loads and loads of bitterness. Look up on a hop chart (web search) to see what their actual character is.
The general rule is, the earlier the hops are added (i.e. during the boil), the more bitterness, the later the more aroma. For maximal bitterness, add as soon as the wort starts to bubble. For maximal aroma, add to the 2nd FV.
Look through the recipes section to see how much to add, to give to the style of beer you want to make. Try 20g Saaz to a pre-hopped kit.

Re: Saaz hops
Can I add to the primary in a muslin bag to gain flavour and aroma rather than bitterness?
Re: Saaz hops
Like I said, the later you add them - the less bitterness they impart. As to a muslin bag - yeah if yuo like. The flavour you're thinking of is bitterness, combined with those parts of the malt extract that are not / cannot be fermented.
Making beer from a kit is supposed to be fool proof, even if you're adding extra hops:
Warm up some water,
Add the contents of the cans to the water and pour mixture into the FV,
Add some more (not hot) water to the wort to make up volume,
Stick the hops in while wort cools down,
When below 32°C - add yeast.
... wait 3 weeks.
Rack into a bucket containing priming solution,
Bottle.
That's it. Good luck.

Re: Saaz hops
So it is possible to add to primary during fermentation? I had read somewhere to wait til it had finished then add hops for a further week or so
