Monday morning disaster!
Monday morning disaster!
I got a Grand Cru on the go yesterday, because my Wherry is in my main FV I decided to use my brewbox polypin.
Made up yesterday with T-58 yeast, around 5pm, thought I'd check in on it this morning before work, opened the door to be greater with a gorgeous smell! Walked over to the polypin to discover it had exploded!!
So the spare room has dark green carpet tiles which are an even darker green now, due to being sodden with nine litres of Grand Cru.
Dashed off to work now hoping I'm not reeking of booze! Not going to be a fun evening me thinks

What's worse is the beer smelt really nice (and that's really nice whilst I was brushing my teeth at 7:30am on a Monday morning!).
Not sure why it wasn't bubbling into the airlock sufficiently though :/

Yeah, I was thinking that ..... I've used ex offie polypins, back in the day. Dave Line jobs. So bloody long ago though that I can't remember how we did it.
So, ye use an air lock? And yet it still exploded ....? That just doesn't equate, does it

Re: Monday morning disaster!
I could try to figure it out and go through it all or I could just forget about it and dispose of the polypin and try to forget all evidence of it's existence.
On the plus side, we did intend to replace the knackered carpet tiles in that room anyway so it's not like it was a brand new axminster carpet or something. On the negative side, my Wherry which has been on the go for just over a week was moved by someone to tidy up whilst I was out. This makes me nervous, I've never moved a brew when it's still fermenting (although I suspct it's done).

I wouldn't worry about that. Moving a goldfish bowl doesn't bother the goldfish half as much as being in the bowl anyway doesoldskooladdict wrote:My Wherry which has been on the go for just over a week was moved by someone to tidy up whilst I was out. This makes me nervous.

(I really must get these f**king ping pong balls out of my eyes!

I had always thought moving the fv was a bad idea, but I guess as long as it's not chucking it down the stairs them bottling I should be okay!
I get to see the carnage in about half hour, hmm

Re: Monday morning disaster!
I would bet that it fermented so well that the 'foam' blocked the (relatively) tiny hole in the airlock . . .This caused a build up of pressure and eventually the polypin split.oldskooladdict wrote:I got a Grand Cru on the go yesterday, because my Wherry is in my main FV I decided to use my brewbox polypin.
I've used polypins to finish a ferment, but never as a primary . . . I'd probably want to use a 1" Blow Off tube on the polypin . . . that will really have to go some to block
Re: Monday morning disaster!
I'd used the polypin before but only for BrewBox beers, not others, I didn't see the difference though. I guess the T-58 yeast must be pretty active for sure, and yes. the diameter out of which the air/etc needs to escape is about the same a a pencil so quite narrow, certainly not an inch.
This is going to be one of the most expensive brews I've ever done at this rate - kit plus yeast plus candy sugar is bad enough, add to that 48 new carpet tiles and it's getting hefty. To be fair I destroyed about 20 tiles and then said rather than try to salvage 6 year old semi-knackered and faded tiles we may as well take the lot up and 'redecorate' for Christmas. Oh dear, what have I let myself in for!

Think you might need a couple of those rubberised gardening trugs, if you're brewing in a carpeted room? I stand my FV in one and always bottle over one - just to catch the drips.
Re: Monday morning disaster!
That might be a decent idea you know. I'd done previous brews inside a wardrobe which didn't have much stuff in it, this is not full of all my junk so I didn't have space. I guess as the carpet was a bit tired I wasn't that fussed. I'd have bottled up in the bathroom though!
Re: Monday morning disaster!
I prefer to have a large vertical drop along the bottling syphon, with the bottling bucket well above the bottles. Therefore, I do that bit in the kitchen, with the souce vessel on a stool, on the counter and the bottles held over a trug. This vertical drop allows me to sit, during what can be a somewhat laborious process.
During fermentation, although I probably don't need to have anything to catch the drips, there's less of a worry when takng samples. And of course, if a closed "finished" FV were to re-ferment, I'd get in less trouble for the outcome of the explosion, if it was mostly contained.
Recommend the low, wide ones, for most things. You might want a taller one to contain a polypin?
