newbie numpty on parade

hi all
well i did the dirty deed got a bucket got a kit Muntons smugglers ale as Werry wasnt in stock mixed the two according to instructions and waited well its finished bubbling so ive bought a barrel (king keg bottom tap) and lubed up the o ring and tap with vasaline half filled with water and added a co2 tube thingy to make sure it dont leak .
how ever i have the tap washer on the outside of the barrel and the tap when i wind the nut on the end jumps a thread as it fully tightens it dont leak and appears to be holding pressure any ideas
i thought about using a bit of ptfe tape or another layer under the tap just to get it back on the thread properly id hate for my first brew to drip into space
has anyone ever come up with a sure fire way of checking the barrel is leak tight i thought about buying a spare lid and adding a pressure guage but that just means another possible area of leaks (dont go down the corni keg route yet ) i want to stay with plastic as the enemy thinks they are cheap and harmless ( she has too long known about how cheap my motorbikes realy are to keep im selling this hobby on it keeps me out of the pub at £3.60 a pint )
any way i guess ill be transfering it to the barrel in the next few days and should i add some sugar or just rely on the co2 bulbs thingys i dont expect a fizz like a lager but a bit of gas would be nice for a head ( northen boy here needs it up to the line with a bit of froth on top not flat like they does round ear)
many thanks for bearing with me and any advice is welcome as im mostly clueless :)

I'm not sure about your tap. I have been using King Kegs for a few years and never had that problem.

You will want some sugar to condition the beer - that is better and cheaper than co2. Your kit will tell you how much, but I find 40g sufficient for 23L.

Make sure you lube the vent seal on the cap - these can block very easily. I use vasaline on a cocktail stick

It is the rubber band round the outside of the collar of the valve. Just make sure it has some vasaline under it. These barrels do not cope with excessive pressure and the release valve must be working.
