Better Brew Czech Pilsner

Type: Pilsner
Hello,

Just finished off my first proper Pilsner.

This was the first time I had used my Temp Controlled Brew Fridge properly.
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=54760#p576159

I brought a "Better Brew Czech Pilsner" kit
http://home-brew-online.myshopify.com/c ... ch-pilsner

I did not use the supplied yeast but brought Saflager W-34/70.

On the 3rd Jan I started the process and used...
Quantity: 23 Litres of Water
Yeast: Saflager W-34/70
Sugars Dextrose Quantity (Grams): 650
Sugars DME Spray Quantity (Grams): 500
Original Gravity: 1042
Temp @ Yeast Pitch: 21 Deg C
Temp @ Fermenting Fridge: 12 Deg C
Diacetyl Rest: 2013-01-25 for 3 days @ 20 Deg C
Specific Gravity After Diacetyl Rest: 1005
Lagering: 2013-01-28 for 60 days
Bottled On: 2013-03-29 and conditioned at 18 Deg C
Ready To Drink On: 2013-04-16 and now at 1 Deg in fridge

Opened one up once a bottle was cold and it was so much better than what I have managed before. I am definatly doing more of these...

Hi snifftheglove I have just got myself this kit and putting it in fv today. The problem I have is no brew fridge, so will have to ferment at 18-21 degrees then bottle and store in loft for a couple of months.

34/70 is a real good lager yeast and is supposed to be a dry version of Wyeast 2124. The information I have on the 2124 is that it is good to use at ale temperatures also. You may also want to consider a clean fermenting ale yeast like Wyeast 1056.
I'm just here for the beer.

Had a few people give it a blind taste test last night at out of 5 people.

I open a bottle of Becks chilled to 1 deg and 1 bottle of mine at 1 deg. Put the contents into small tumbers and gave them out as sample A and Sample B (B being mine)

Looking at the their tumbers this was the results.

Sample A B
Clarity 3 2
Head 1 4
Taste 2 3

Results 6 9

I was (and they) were surprised. I am definalty buying more now.......

Sorry Nb1, was meant for Sniff. A positive spin on your green lid is that even if it had worked out the BB Pils will still be a lot nicer

That got drunk!!!

Taste wise it was OK but could be a lot better. If I have to give marks out of ten based on the Better Brew as 10, then the coopers was about 6. I am sure it could be better as I did not have a fully working temp controller brew fridge at the time and also used the kit yeast.

Cost wise the Coopers and Better Brew Pilnsner are approx the same cost for the extract, with a little extra for the Saflager W-34/70.

So thumbs up for Better Brew!!!

So the kit brewed in a brew fridge with additional yeast gets a 10. The kit brewed warm with no additional yeast gets a 6.

Like your mark's, very scientific.
