razor back ipa

Post by Dyer » Thu Nov 14, 2013 10:40 pm

I have just put on a festival razorback ipa , it came with a couple of sachets of hops which it says put in after 5 days fermentation then leave for 5 days before bottling .
The problem I have is when I brew I put my kit in the fv close the lid then 2 weeks later I bottle it , I have a hydrometer but I havent used it for a year or 2 now the 2 week thing seems to work well for me. So my question is should I put the hops in on day 5 then leave until day 14 or should I put them in on day 9 and leave for the last 5 days.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
while I was at my lhbs earlier purchasing the above kit the chap there gave me a flyer for 2 new bulldog kits that look worth a try, an american pale ale and an american double ipa with an abv of 7.2 % !

Personally I'd add the hops on day 9, because you may end up with grassy flavours if you leave them in for too long.

The reason they suggest adding them on day 5, is because the vigorous early fermentation in the first few days, will carry off alot of the hop aromas with all of the escaping CO2.

I also leave my beers in the FV for 2 weeks and don't bother with the hydrometer - I keg my beers - and I put the hops in my Razorback after the first week. However, as a mate also found with this kit, it was still fermenting after two weeks; I ended up leaving it in the FV for a total of 3 weeks for it to finish! However, it has now cleared and has a nice grapefruity hop flavour so having the hops in there for 2 weeks doesn't seem to have caused any harm.

Sounds like I might have to dust off my hydrometer in that case.

Having just done a Razorback IPA, 5 days is way too early in my experience. Fermentation took almost 3 weeks and was easily the slowest I've encountered yet.
