John Bull IPA kit questions

Post by Manngold » Sun Jul 06, 2014 7:41 pm

Hey all. Hope you have all had a good brewing weekend!

Has anyone used the kit mentioned in the title? I am thinking of brewing this and dry hopping with a large amount of cascade. Any recommendations on the type of spray malt etc to use? Hoping to get on next weekend if people think this sounds ok?

Happy brewing

Thanks, will get on this weekend! Any suggestions on the fermentables to add. I have only ever brewed a two can kit, or with brewing sugar from wilko's.

Thanks

Substitute sugar for light DME and away you go.

Somebody else may have another idea.

Thanks Lee. So I am thinking 1kg light DME with about 200g sugar. Does that sound about right?

Thanks

UPDATE:

Ok, so I put this kit on last night to the following recommendations.

1 tin John Bull IPA 1.8kg
1kg youngs beer enhancer
250g golden caster sugar
Kit yeast

O.G - 1.046 (my highest kit O.G yet, this could be stronger than 5%).

I plan to do dry hop with cascade after fermentation and then keg. Is 100grams of cascade at 5 days too much?

If I wanted to do secondary fermentation and rack it onto the cascade (is that a thing??!!), how long could I leave it in a second FV - is two weeks too long?

Thanks

I would personally add your hops to the primary FV once fermentation is pretty much done. And then rack to a clean FV after 5-7 days of dry hopping, leaving the hops and yeast behind, and then leave to clear some more for another 4-5 days before kegging/bottling.

Expect to lose a good litre of your brew to the hops, but it will be well worth it ;-)

Cheers

Why would I lose a litre of the brew MB? I am still learning, do the hops soak it up?

So would two weeks in a second FV be too long?

Thanks

Hi MG

Yeah, hops especially whole leaf suck up the wort.

My dry hopped brews usually get bottled around day 21.

I bought an adapted kit from a local homebrew shop last week and they told me to chuck the hops in (whole hops in a muslin bag) at the off.

So I did but, Reading this thread now has me a bit worried!

Will it be ok?

You can't harm the brew by chucking them in from the off, but some of your dry hopping aromas will be driven by CO2 thats produced during the initial vigorous fermentation.

Cheers
