Slightly odd...

Post by PaddyX21 » Thu Aug 07, 2014 9:06 pm

So I haven't brewed a kit in a while, but let's face it it isn't rocket science.

I picked up one of the Wilkos Sweet Newkie Brown's, as I enjoyed it last time I made one.
Just made it up with 500g Medium DME, 700g Dextrose, and 250g raw brown sugar, to a brew length of 21L.

Here's where it gets odd - SG is reading at 1024?! So bemused am I that I dug out a second hydrometer, but it agrees with the first.

Surely something is not right here! I could add more fermentables, but there should be enough there for 1045ish already I would have thought...

Any and all opinion appreciated!

Pads; I don't really do this f**king with the float and making the calculator smoke with the sums then involved business.

But, even I suspect there's something horrible f**king wrong here!

21 Litres? What's that in Gallons? I make my gear to the four gallon mark ~ unless I'm feeling suicidal. I've no idea what strength mine comes out at. But, it's a single can kit and I chuck in pretty much as near as damn it as you do ..... Mine works.

Sounds like ye've produced something maybe a tad weaker than my first mornings piss there

I thinks it's quite likely that the extra fermentables have not mixed in properly, particularly the DME thus giving you a false reading.

The yeast should still find it though so I wouldn't worry.

That's about 4.5gal Ditch, it's not normal, and I don't think I've done anything different to usual either.

Sounds logical and plausible Joe, although I broke out the hand blender and nuked it as the DME went lumpy - sorted that though.
It could be a gradient from the final topping off with water however, like I say it seems a logical answer.

I'll leave it to it's own devices and see how it goes, if it ends up as cats piss then I'll clean the bog with it - actually let's face it I'll probably still drink it lol
