Hop tea at the same time as dry hop?

Post by SquireKnott » Fri Aug 22, 2014 8:02 pm

I'm putting either a Milestone Shine On or a Wilko real ale on tonight/tomorrow and have some Amarillo actual hops and some Chinook hop pellets.

The last brew I did involved a load of hops in a muslin bag being soaked in hot water for 20 mins and the resultant hop tea (have I got that right?) being poured in along with the bag of hops from the off.

Should I do this again with the Amarillo?

Or if I wait to dry hop at the end could/should I soak them again in the same way the pour the hop tea in?

From what I've got to work with - Wilko Real Ale, Milestone Shine on! Amarillo hops and chinook hop pellets - what would you lot do?

Add the hop tea before you pitch the yeast.
Add the dry hops once the main ferment has died down (after 5-7 days usually)

Hello SK,
If you are Brewing tonight, I am too late. If you are Brewing tomorrow, you might find this interesting or self centered blah depending
on your take of things!
My take on Milestones Shine On.....20Lts
2 can kit
1 bottle Golden Syrup 454gr
50gr Cascade Hops boiled 5mins in water from brew cans
1Kg Light Spraymalt
SG @ 22deg 1050
Day 7 Dry Hop 50gr Cascade
Day 14 FG 1010 ABV 5.5%
Batch prime 70Gr Sugar for bottling.
Bloody Lovely Mun!
Scroll down Main Forum, Look on Beer Reviews, Look in Members Bottle Swaps, Shine On 5.5%. `Twas a very nice drink!
None left after 6 weeks! What a Pig I am! :D
Good Luck with the Brew! =D>

Thanks lads - I'll try that WA once I've built up stocks but just want to use what I've got for now.

I reckon I've got about 60g of Amarillo - would you simply go half for the hop tea and half to dry hop or otherwise?
Should I chuck the Chinook in too, or some of it?

Can you do a hop tea with pellets?

SK,
How much Amarillo and Chinook have you got?
Take a look on Forum, scroll down to Hops, ask the question on there, They know their Hops more than I do! :D =D>
They will answer your question, even though they are a bunch of HopHeads, they like to help! (And they are nice people too)! :D :D :D

For cleaning I purely use boiling water and soda crystals.

Personally I clean with hot water and normal washing up liquid then rinse out very thoroughly before sterilising. I know washing up liquid is frowned upon because any inclusion of it in your finished brew will kibosh your head but I have not experienced that problem as I thoroughly rinse.
