Coopers European Lager

Post by mrcpea » Fri Aug 22, 2014 7:08 pm

Hi,
Just ordered one of these from Tesco Direct for £10.
Want to make a lager for Christmas and I've been advised that this comes with a lager yeast.
Will the kit be OK, or would adding some hop pellets be the way to go?

Many thanks

Richard.

Hi Richard

What brewlength and fermentables are you going for?

The Euro Lager is a decent kit and is fairly tasty as it is if you brew it to 20/21L.

Hersbrucker go well with this kit and my last Euro was brewed with Tettnang and was very tasty.

I'm brewing my next one with Perle hops.

Cheers

Hi Turbo,
Many thanks for that. I'm new to lager making and hopping of any description, so that's excellent :-)

Cheers,

Richard

Hi Monkeybrew,
I am totally open to suggestions. I assume a shorter brew length (say 21l) will give a more flavoursome beer?
What I'm after is a fairly light lasting lager without the ale taste you get with ale yeast.
I was thinking of just using brewing sugar (maybe 1KG) as this might give a cleaner taste and a crisp lager?
I was thinking of some saaz hop pellets, dissolved in the FV at an appropriate time. As I've never added anything to a kit before, I would appreciate detailed instructions of how to do this, including amount of pellets, what time to put them in, and if I need some kind of filter when the Fermentation has finished. I have a 2nd FV and plenty of bottles :-)
I batched primed my coopers bitter with 130g of caster sugar and it was just right for me.

I assume that the cooper euro lager will need a lower fermentation temp?

Please tell me if if sounding daft at all, and I really will appreciate any advice from someone who knows what they're doing.

Many thanks,

Richard.

Sorry to answer as I know this was for monkey brew .i brew at 21l all the time with this kit I did the same I added 1 kg of brew enhancer and 300g of plan brewing sugar I like to make my kit at 3kg in total more if I want it stronger also the brew enhancer gives it a good head the beer was a lovely light colour,I dry hop with 100g all the time wait until fermentation has stopped or slows right down after about a week before dry hop if you add it sooner fermentation will kill of all those lovely aromas you are trying to get I dry hop for a week , then use a sieve to remove hops after a week then transfer into second fv for clear drop.the temp for the yeast don't panic as it's from Australia and was meant for their high temps .
Well I think I've got some of this right if not monkey brew will keep is both right .
Good luck mate

It sounds like you want an authentic clean lager taste and for that you'd need to cold ferment it. If you don't have temperature control it will be tricky to get a good result. Lager is such a pain compared to ale.

I do love Citra, but unless you are looking to brew a hoppy blonde ale, then it's not exactly suited to a European Lager IMO.

MANY thanks for everyone's suggestions. I have plenty to go on there. I will pick the kit up on Tuesday, and get it on after my next planned brew which is another Coopers Bitter.
I also have a Festival Golden Stag, which has a filter bag in, so I'll use that to filter out the hop pellets in the lager :-)

Cheers

Richard

The golden stag is a good brew. My favourite so far!
