Swapped my lager kit for a wilkos English ale kit. Getting everything out ready to do my first brew and the foil packet is already open and the box isn't air tight.
Good job I've not wasted sanitiser.
I take it I should wait till tomorrow and swap or has anyone used opened yeast?

Re: yeast foil packet already open
I think you probably could put everything in the FV and then pitch the yeast tomorrow morning if you have the time to do it now. If not, take it back to Wilko's and return it.
Hopefully someone witha bit more expertise might be able to back me up (or shoot me down)!

Girlfriends on nights all weekend so luckily free house at night to swear loudly trying haha
Re: yeast foil packet already open
I agree with Manngold, although the brewing up does not take that long so if possible I would swap the kit for one without an open yeast before brewing to minimise the chance of infection—small as that may be with thoroughly clean and sterilised equipment.

It is done. Went wilkos this morning and swapped kit for golden ale. Did everything this morning. Took over an hour, it was easy I was just being paranoid cleaning everything, I blame me and the Mrs being nurses for that.
I enjoyed myself. Hoping it's the start of something good.
My starting gravity was 1075. But I did take the sample from the very top

Well done on starting your first brew, but 1.075 is way too high for a standard 2 can kit. 1.040 is more like what you should be getting in a 23L brew.
Cheers

Re: yeast foil packet already open
Sorry forgot to mention. The temp was 25-26 c at the time. Forgot to check temp before adding yeast. Rookie error.
There's no bubbling yet but its still 4c warmer than ambient temperature. I thought I gave the fermentor a good stir before adding yeast but there's a 1/4 inch sludge pile at the bottom.
Thanks for advice

Temperature does have an effect on hydrometer readings, but the warmer your wort is, the more the hydrometer will sink giving you a lower reading. Most hydrometers are calibrated at 20C.fitzy85 wrote:Sorry forgot to mention. The temp was 25-26 c at the time. Forgot to check temp before adding yeast. Rookie error.

The sludge in the bottom of your fermentor is more than likely your yeast that has been busy multiplying since you chucked it in. You'll be surprised how that little 6g sachet of yeast grows!
