how to get my brews quaffing/session strength?

If in a one can kit I only added the kit and say 500g of DME would I end up generally speaking with a 3.5 to 3.8 is beer? My home brew seems to go to my head quicker these days than it used to.

I've rarely achieved anything over 4% with a one can kit and 1kg of sugar/BKE/malt extract, though to be fair I've stopped measuring now. I'd have thought 500g of the least fermentable option would knock the ABV down to less than 3...
