Low OG - coopers stout

Post by dasbootfish » Sat Nov 01, 2014 4:49 pm

Just put a coopers stout together, bastardised the kit and brewed short to 20L, recipe below - the OG came out at 1035 (25 deg.) which I thought seemed very low, am I right?

Recipe :
1 x coopers stout
454g H & B malt extract
400g dark muscovado
200g BKE
2 tbsp. treacle

Do I have a problem with low OG as I was hoping this would be a bit of a meaty concoction? Should I prime heavily to increase the ABV?

Thanks for any help.

dasboot,
Why only 200Gr BKE? The kit instructions clearly state `1Kg white sugar or other such fermentables`.
Bung in the other 800Gr BKE,Stir like Bloody F&ck, take another Hydro reading, if that`s too low for you, bung in 500gr of Med Spraymalt, if that`s still too low for
you, bung in another 500gr med spraymalt. (Then go and hide somewhere safe while the Brew goes Mental)! :D
Don`t use white sugar, it will make the beer `thin`.
Read every page of `Ditch`s Stout`, in the stickies at the top of this page. :D :D =D> =D>

Wales, with the muscovado and malt extract, surely that adds up to over a kilo of extra fermentables?

OG does sound a bit low though. Maybe it's just not mixed properly?

Widders,
dasboot added the extra 800gr BKE, SG 1050, he`s happy with that. I don`t know about the other stuff, I`ve never used them.

Bottled this stuff on 17th nov so thought it was time to sample. Hell's teeth!!!
Might have to give Betty Ford a ring, this is an unbelievably rich, strong fruitcake. Probably have to drink this treacle in singles, use it as a foundation, deffo not a session beer. Some amazing tastes and deep as billyo! Forgot to mention on recipe, I added some licorice that i'd boiled for 30 mins right at the start, worked well.
Ps. The extra bke done the trick WA, thanks fella.

I have attacked this one twice now, first one was bottled, the second is king kegged...out the keg its utterly awesome, bordering on dangerously good, however the recipe was slightly different for each brew and will be tweaked again for no3

Brew 1 was 20L, 1KG dark spray malt, coopers kit, 1x454g tin dark treacle...this one came out at 4.4% (low i know) and is bottled...its very good
Brew 2 was 20L, 750g Amber spray malt (all i had)coopers kit, 250g demerara sugar, 454g black treacle...this one came out at 5.6%, its kegged, utterly superb, although a tiny bit thin on mouth feel.

So..brew 3 will be as brew 2 but with 1.5KG spray malt (may stick amber but may go back to dark), still deciding on the sugar although i think i will leave it.

All were/will be fermented at 22C using a heater.

I had thought adding 1lb of treacle would kill it...far from it, i tasted a treacle stout in The Magnet (stockport) last weekend and while good its not a patch on mine here, it was thin, lacking complexity compared to the coopers brew and would you believe Vs the kegged kit here not as creamy and was lacking in after taste.

If brew 3 comes out over 6% I will go down to halves instead of pints, right now the kegged brew is very moreish even at 5.6% and its easy to sink 4 or more.
