Irish Moss in Kits?......

Post by WalesAles » Sat Dec 06, 2014 6:43 pm

Hello Everyone,
I`ve done a few Wherry kits before and they have dropped really clear, my last 2 are like mud after a month in the bottles.
Is it worth using Irish Moss in a kit? Could I use IM in a Kit? Would it work?
Every other kit I`ve done before has dropped out quickly. Any reason why these Wherrys are a pain?
I won`t use them again because I`ve had better results with kits at half the price.

Do you boil your wort for a kit these days? if so adding irish moss for the last 15 mins may do something? if you dont boil i wouldnt bother as afaik it works with the heat of the boil, to clump and precipitate the hot break.
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..

Cheers Fil,
Just what I had read. I don`t boil my kits and when I read in GW`s book, `add IM for the last 10 - 15 min boil`, I just had to ask! :D

I use it in my extract brews but have been told I don't need it. Haven't tried without though to find out.

If you're batch priming m8, you could always try making up and adding a slug of gelatine to the mix before bottling - it would make most of the cloudies drop in the bottle but hopefully leave enough yeast in suspension to carbonate.

I've done two Wherries and they've both dropped clear. Did you make any mods Wales?

Perhaps some floating chicken fat could be causing the cloudiness!

EB,
My Bro`s had 100gr Willamette, Mine had 129.4gr of 4 different hops in them.
500gr Med Spraymalt in mine, 500gr Light Spraymalt in Bro`s.
I`ve hopped Wherrys loads of times and they`ve always dropped clear. Don`t what`s happened to these two! #-o #-o
No chicken fat involved in both brews!

How strange. I was considering making Wherry my reliable go-to. Maybe I need to reconsider.
