Milk stout
Milk stout
Areet! Got a muntons stout kit and fancy making a milk stout, as close to Stones milk stout as I can get. I understand this may end up being called Stones Ryanair Milk stout but gonna try anyway. Gonna order some lactose powder and getting some simcoe hops anyway and also have some phoneix.
Can anyone give and direction or tips?
Cheers

Re: Milk stout
I shall follow this with interest. I'd not thought about it before, but actually I didn't know what "milk stout" was, so I looked it up. Turns out that Mackesons produce(d) one. I remember back in the early 70s both my parents drinking Mackesons, so I might have to have a go at making some and see what they think.

Do Not try pouring cows milk into a glass of Mackeson!
Many moons ago ~ curious as to what this " Milk Stout ", beloved of Ena Sharples was ~ I did that.
Enough said!

Euuuwww. That sounds horrible. I imagine it curdles rather unpleasantly.

Milk stout is class! Stone's is incredible which isnt really a surprise. Think I'm gonna add simcoe hops because they're incredible, also the lactose power and then age on whisky chips for a bit. Just about to order some stuff now so will get this on soon and keep you all posted

Re: Milk stout
I made one with a 1 can coopers stout kit( sorry ditch) 500g lactose, 500g dark spray malt and 500g dark brown sugar, then added 80g cocoa powder mixed in boiling water and 6 double espressos after primary had finished and bottled it. it took a couple of months to settle down but is now a lovely drink. I plan to try again but use hops and speciality grain instead of espresso and chocolate powder. just remember when doing the calculation that lactose doesn't ferment so you end up with a sweeter end product and have to still add enough fermentables to get the abv you want.

Re: Milk stout
Update: Package from Rob arrived today, including lactose, dark DME and simcoe hops. Gonna get this bad boy on at the weekend. Gonna brew as follows:
Muntons stout 2 can kit.
500g Dark DME
250g brown sugar
500g lactose
25g simcoe steeped around 70c for 30 mins
25g dry hop after 2 weeks in FV.
Might also transfer to secondary FV with some Jack Daniels smoking chips in and age for a week or so, thoughts on this?

Re: Milk stout
If you're going to add the smoking chips then I might be tempted to split the batch and do some with, some without.

Re: Milk stout
Good idea mate but I keg the beer and only have one keg and no bottles haha. Might give the chips a miss actually and keep them for a smokey chocolate and chilli porter when I can brew all grain again
Re: Milk stout
Ah, yes, that would make it a bit more tricky

Beer is on! OG was 1080 but I know the lactose won't ferment so I'm expecting a high finishing gravity too. Got a feeling it's going to turn out like Beaver towns India stout. Only time will tell!!
