Crystalised Ginger in Bitter?

Post by Hoppkins » Mon Jul 30, 2007 10:26 am

I had a beer a while back called "Sly Fox" (i think). It was a nice bitter with a hint of ginger.

I noticed lakelands sell crystalised ginger in tiny little cubes. I was thinking of adding a small amount of these to the secondary to impart a hint of ginger.

Would the ginger need to be boiled first?

Thanks

Only reason im doing this is because this was my "final kit" before summer (Erm before the Wherry...which really IS the last) and i had banked on bottling it so wasnt too fussy.

Its a geordie bitter kit with beer enhancer and first taste is a bit thin but will probably get better. My dad loves ginger ale and so do i so and ginger seems to go well with bitter.

Just stuck with how much to add to a keg!

I have noticed a few folk say "last batch before summer"... any reason for this (other than booked holidays?)....

Just got me curious that's all!

Oh aye - that ginger - lovely stuff! You may need a reasonable amount to get flavour into the beer though I would have thought. My mother makes cakes with the stuff :D

It is more difficult to keep fermentation of beer within reasonable limits during summer - too hot and the flavour suffers.

Edit - having camped in the highlands of scotland last year I guess this might be less of a problem for you though

Aaaah - that would explain it, ta :)

The temperature here at the moment is decidedly...well...not even average! I think this summer has just given up completely - roll on autumn!

My "last one" is a fudge really. I bought a bit plastic tub and plan to stick my fermenters in it with water and ice. Should be ok :)

I used to know a guy that put preserved ginger (the stuff in jars in syrup) in a beer. The stuff in jars should be pasteurised and the sugar would help priming....
