Admirals Reserve is go.

Post by MickyD » Sat Aug 11, 2007 1:13 pm

Well I have taken on board everything I have learnt from you guys over the past few weeks and tried to put it all into practice for this one.

Water treated.
All tips on cleaning equipment etc followed.

I have even gone as far as putting some of the treated water in the airlock on top of the FV, just in case.

I have waited for all the exact temperatures and aerated the wort to the point where I had to wait for the suds to die down until I could put the lid on it.

The OG was 1.040 at 21c (wouldn't go any lower in temp as its currently 26 c outside and our house is pretty warm)

One thing I will say is, with the Wherry I remember tasting the TCP taste straight away when I had mixed it up at the beginning, but theres no sign of it with this and the treated water. So fingers crossed.

Nice one MickyD :D

When using a bubbler i usually put a little cheap supermarket vodka in it (that way you know its going to remain sterile) you don't need very much at all, so it probably only costs a few pence.

Yeah when I did my TC I used an old Clear Plum Schnapps that I have, but the smell of the fermenting coming through the schnapps was evil, lol.

So the Orangey thing I have bubbling away like mad and the Admirals Reserve are having water for now.

I couldn't get the DME to dissolve in my current batch, so I quickly steralised a hand blender that I use for making soup and stuck it in! Sorted out the DME in no time, and as a bonus did an absolute stunning job of aerating the wort :D

I waited until the suds had settled, and folded the rest into the wort so it was pretty much clear on the top. I then just sprinkled the DME over the top and watched it all sink slowly into the wort, then went crazy with my spoon to mix it all in, so hopefully its well mixed.

There were a few bits that seemed to sort of clump into little lumps, which I crushed with the spoon and they seemed to mix in then.

A few hours later and the thing is starting to bubble. I actually cut a hole in the lid of my FV and fitted an airlock, which I didnt do the first time. The lid of the FV is starting to bulge upwards and the bubbles are coming.:D

yes, in one of by books it says bringing all your malt, be it DME or LME to the boil in a pan has a really positive effect on the outcome, how true this is I do not know as I have never tried it, but i may well give it a blast next time I brew, easyer as I will be boiling some hops and co in the pan so will remove those and just wang the malt into the flavoured water.. its all going to the same place right!!!

Ok its only been 5 days, but I just HAD to test it :D

The hydrometer reading is 1.016. and its still fermenting.
The beer is clearer than my 5 week kegged Wherry.
It tastes like BEER !!!!

I am so happy, theres none of that weird taste that the Wherry has, and it smells great, and I can still taste the beer in my mouth I want to drink more of it. NOW!

Great result there Mick.

Problem is if it tastes that good now what chance does it have of making a few weeks to mature? =P~

I put my admirals reserve in the keg yesterday and it looked and tasted great better than a batch of wherry I bottled 4 weeks ago, still in the outhouse clearing.I will have a problem leaving the admirals long enough before I start supping it!
