Smugglers Special

Post by Dave.T » Wed Mar 26, 2025 1:26 am

Had to take a short break from allgrain and wanted to do a Smugglers Special kit which was my favourite before i made the step up only to find that Muntons had discontinued it.
Does anyone know why.

Product consolidation or something like that. This sounds like it could be similar? I actually have a Smugglers in my 2nd keg, due to be tapped in about 4 or 5 days.

I've not done one yet but it's on it shopping list

Quick Google reveals the following message from the home brew shop about the whole handcrafted range:

SORRY MUNTONS ARE DISCONTINUING THIS RANGE,
As they say Flagship range has taken over, SORRY nothing to do with us, its out of our hands

Seems a shame as the Flagship range is designed for craft ales, and does not include strong traditional beers.

Its' a shame it was one of the best kits around with 3.6 Kg of malt extract. I did a St Peters Ruby Red in the end, any recommendations for what's out there at the moment i might have to do another kit .

Bit different from what you've been doing, but I like Muntons Yorkshire Bitter, made using DME and swapping out yeast. It ends up being the same cost as a two can kit, but there isn't a two can equivalent. Full bodied easy drinking bitter. Guy in the home brew shop tells me he sells loads of that kit.

Hope you enjoy the Ruby beer kit.

Thanks for that, i always used to add extra yeast to kits anyway even the better quality kits are way underpitched. Going back to the early 80's the yeast in those kits wasn't much better than bread yeast.
