Rcommended Porter

Post by Wauny » Wed Aug 29, 2007 10:18 am

I'd like to brew a Porter (as opposed to a stout) ready for Xmas, preferably along the lines of Fullers superb London Porter.

Brupaks have an Old London Porter kit - has anyone made up this kit before, and does it come recommended?

Cheers

Cheers DaaB. Having never made a Brupaks kit, but read about them on the forum, how much do they make? I don't want to run dry before Santa puts in an appearance 8)

Just looked on their website and this is one of the Brubox kits, so will make 10 litres I guess. Presumably I can double up and make this kit in the usual way with a 25litre FV etc?

Thanks

Cheers.

Having looked around the forum and Brupaks website, I may give their Scammonden Dark a go instead. Decisions, decisions........

Go with the Scammadon... and let me know how it comes out! I was torn between that and the Almondbury Old and may order it up later on (even if I go AG I suspect that a few kits will still get brewed up for convinience and all that!)

Thanks Orkney, I'd not seen the Almondbury Old and it sounds like the type of beer I love. You've now put me in a proper dilemma now...... :?

My mate informed me it was the last kit he made before emigrating to Oz, and took a good long while to condition. Apparently it tasted a bit nasty for a long while, the last bottle the night before they left however was pure nectar!

Fortunatly I am making this one next so there should be a couple of kegs to get through before it needs to be tapped properly!!!! Well - so long as my IPA starts to come good anyway!

Just ordered the Almondbury Old from H&G. Thanks for the tip about the conditioning time Orkney.

Will probably get the Scammonden on the go once the Almondbury is conditioning. Ahhh, roll on Xmas..... 8)

Good choice,

I've done the Almondbury and the Scammonden and I'd say the Almondbury is probably the tastier of the two. Although maybe that's just a matter of taste.

I should also mention that the Scammonden didn't really taste like a Porter to me. If you like a good dark ale you should try Old Conkerwood - a friend of mine made that one and its the best dark ale I've tasted from a kit.

Jymbo, who makes the Old Conkerwood kit?

Conkerwood is made by Muntons and it's in their premium range, usually around £19-20, it's a good kit making a decent dark beer.
