use green gaymers bottles and newky to keep an eye on the condition, have stopped using brown as i find em a pain when filling not being able to see the level.

got all my gaymers when the've been on offer at netto think they drop em to 79p and 69p every now and then, not bad for a pint of cider and a bottle =D>

I have about 400 German brown weizen bottles in cases, I have German friends who bring back cases of the stuff every year and they don't bother bringing bottles back for returns.
I have one case of flip top bottles, also from a German mate and I have three cases of 330ml bottles for higher gravity brews. All the rest are 500ml. It's great having German mates :)

ooops no linking allowed from there.

I used to use a huge collection of Newky Brown bottles but ditched the lot as they're clear and got me money back before they stopped making them returnable.

The thicker the glass the better really, try to avoid thin walled glass bottles like Bud etc, and if you're using a two handed capper, avoid bottles from Batemans, Wychwood, Duchy Originals, Brakspear and any others which have an odd neck on them, unless you have a bench capper, then you can cap just about any bottle.
My brother in law just gave me a load of brakspear bottles so after reading this post I went and got one to see if I could cap it, it's a bit fiddly but I managed it. My favorite are Magners bottles.

This is going to be contrary to every other post so far :? I use 2 litre PET bottles and as many smaller ones as I come across. I have about 200 litres in bottles at the moment, all kept in the dark.

The brown capped bottles would be a nice touch but, as all those who only use barrells say, "I can't be arsed with the hassle"

I don't have any beer quality problems and they seem to keep well..................bottles don'n come any cheaper :D

Newky brown for me, they're strong great for seeing your beer clear, pouring, filling, and cleaning.

I always use the old quart cider bottles with the internal threaded screw top, hard to come by but they are the best.

This is a GREAT Method. I agree that brown is probably prefered, but a few clear are also useful.

Another great titp i picked up was to use a couple of PET bottles too.... that way you can have an idea of how they are carbonating by giving a little squeeze now and then.

I don't bottle much, but most of mine are clear and kept in the dark.

I do have a handful of brown bottles which will no doubt multiply and take over. Anybody else find occasional Off License purchases are made with this in mind?! =P~

THE best bottles of the lot are FULLERS - labels slide off, dark coloured glass, thick and heavy and cap fine.

I would also say I think a bench capper is cheap when you think of the advantages. Brakespear and Wychwood are two of my other favourite bottles as the labels also slide off with a soak.
