Thank god for that. Is the sample usually left for a couple of mins to allow for the release of co2 before dropping the hydrometer in or just drop in straight away. Also how long do you leave in before taking the reading?

One thng always do when taking a reading is to spin the hydrometer several times which helps to kn sock the C02 out. After this, I let the 'head' settle before spinning the hydrometer again to take a reading.

It may sound a lot but it only takes a few seconds to 'prepare'

My technique is to place the hydrometer into the sample, give the stem a twist between my fingers to spin it on release. Wait for spinning to stop, take reading, drink contents of trial jar :D

so neither of you leave it any longer than about 60-90 seconds max before taking the reading? Will take the reading now.........

Don't worry, I would never let one drop of beer go to waste let alone a whole trial jar full.
