'Lagering' and suchlike questions-a-plenty
Re: 'Lagering' and suchlike questions-a-plenty
Ok, so now this has me worrying about my brew! There are clear signs of fermentation around the 3 - 4.5 degree mark but as I said earlier its been very slow. Im now wondering what course of action to follow? Should I continue as I planned. Wang my fish tank heater in there to bring the temp up slightly. Move the FV inside? Any ideas?

Hi Dave!
It may well be fermenting at this temp range.... although v e r y s l o w l y... lol
you could bring it insode or move it to somewhere about 9-12C....
what yeast are you using? how much did you pitch?

It must've been the arran jumper with elbow batches.... Oh and I have a whippet.... lol

Im using S-23. I rehydrated 2x11.5g packs (so 23g in total).

Here is the spec sheet, 9C is the lower bound for that yeast

80 to 120 g/hl for pitching at 12C – 15C. Increase dosage for pitching below 12C, up to 200 to 300 g/hl at 9C.

I think on that basis I will bring the FV indoors to lift the temperature.

Can the fishtank heater do 10 degrees?
If it can then fire it in. Inside will probably too high of a temperature.
Re: 'Lagering' and suchlike questions-a-plenty
I checked ant the heaters lowest setting is 18. The brew's spent the night under the kitchen table and is sitting at 12 degrees this morning so although less than ideal its not to hot. Im going to give it a gentle stir to rouse the yeast and then let it do its thing.

12 should be much better, if it stays in or about that you're sorted.
Re: 'Lagering' and suchlike questions-a-plenty
We left the house to head to the inlaws at 10am and it had only crept up to 12.5 degrees so I'm happy. Called in at the local home brew shop on the way past and picked up some really handy tips (as well as spending £35).
Re: 'Lagering' and suchlike questions-a-plenty
Hi FWIW my lagers both fermented in the 10-14C range and are great...

If it stays between 12-15 you shoul dbe home and dry... lol
I could be wrong in the folloowing statement, so please correct me...
The packet of yeast states that the ideal ferment temp is in the 12-15C range

Hope this helps...

Re: 'Lagering' and suchlike questions-a-plenty
The tips and advice were more to do with the best bottling and dry hopping methods to suit my brew so nothing really to tell.... as for temp... its currently at an all time high of 14.2 degrees and going crazy! Ive turned the radiator off in the kitchen to help it stay between 9 and 14 (dont tell mrs bigdave)
