jimw86,s out of date Brew Buddy Bitter kit club
Re: jimw86,s out of date Brew Buddy Bitter kit club
I haven't heard this before. Perhaps it should be the subject of a separate post?? When I first started my 'beer guru' advised me against racking, telling me it wasn't necessary as the beer would clear anyway, and that you just risked oxidising or introducing infection. But we have to try these things out I suppose?

Re: jimw86,s out of date Brew Buddy Bitter kit club
Had a cheeky taste of this last night. Only been in the bottle since Sunday! This is the first kit i've modified and it' s cracker! Just gotta keep my hands off for a few weeks. I used my bottling stick on the end of a syphon tube straight out of the FV. Made 150ml of solution mixed with 80g of water and poured a measured amount into each bottle to prime. Really nice delicate, light sparkle and a lovely dark golden colour.Roy wrote:
1x brew buddy bitter kit
1kg of spraymalt light or dark, to be decided
40g Cascade hops steeped in a percolaor for 30 mins
1x jar of clear honey, boiled to sanitise
May change the yeast as kit is out of date...
Can definitely taste the cascade too

Evening All
My first experiment goes as follows:
1kg medium spraymalt
1 x can of brewbuddy
1 x rehydrated S04
1 x EKG hopped tea (15g @ 30 mins)
Dry hop with 25g EKG after initial vigorous fermentation.
I've just put it on today, if I could find the lid of my fermenter, I'd put another one on with Amarillo
I'm going for a nice hoppy session beer, so I've added water until the wort came in at 1042, I then aerated it with a sterilised hand blender for a minute before pitching the yeast. It's now gone in the brewfridge at 23C.

Re: jimw86,s out of date Brew Buddy Bitter kit club
Well Chaps,
Just had a sneaky taste of my latest using the second can of out of date youngs brew buddy bitter.
Been in the bottles for appx 2 weeks.
This time i used,
The can of OOD brew bitter,
1k pack of beer enhancer,
Roughly 20 ml from a 38ml bottle of Supercook vanilla essence,
I think, about 10grms of cascade hop pellets [just put into a cup of boiling water for appx 5 mins to dissolve for aroma] then put the contents in when brew had finished fermenting and leave for a further 2 days.
OG started at 1.050 down to 1.008 roughly 5.25% .
Even at this early stage ,its a cracking drink, very, very slight vanilla taste, just about right for me hop wise,a lovely smell.
I,ve got that feeling its going to be a good one,if i can leave it alone to mature![Applause =D>](./images/smilies/eusa_clap.gif)

Re: jimw86,s out of date Brew Buddy Bitter kit club
Really pleased with all of these Brewbuddy experiments my third one gets bottled tonight or tomorrow.
What really stuns me is how quickly they clear - I've had one that was ready to drink after 17 days in the bottle; clear as a bell.
The second kit I've got is a Pacific Gem variation
1 x Brewebuddy
1 x 1kg BKE
15 g PG hops steeped for 10 mins
1 x rehydrated SO4
25g Pacific Gem dry hop
I've also got an identical Nelson Sauvin version ready to bottle.
Jim, if you're coming to my birthday party, you'll get the opportunity to taste them. (the GF can drive

Re: jimw86,s out of date Brew Buddy Bitter kit club
Thanks to Jim I received my kits this week.
I decided to split the first one into 2 10L batches.
For the first batch I used the following.
900g Brew Buddy Bitter Kit
300g (ish) Honey
Zest of 2 Oranges
1 Vanilla Pod (split, seeds scraped out and roughly chopped)
Brought the above to the boil with 2L of campden treated water.
15g (ish) Progress
Added and boiled for 10 mins.
Into the FV with 500g Light Spray Malt, given a good trashing and topped up to 10L
Safale 04 added
OG 1.044
For the second Batch i went over the top which resulted in my brew night finishing at 1AM
Minimashed - 200g Pale Malt - 200g Crystal Malt - 100g Torrified Wheat (Done on the hob which was a faff to keep the temp in range) in 2L water for 1 hr.
Sparged with original runnings and another 2L water at 80 deg.
Back onto the hob with other 900g Brew Buddy Best Bitter and brought to boil.
500g Light spray malt added.
15g (ish) Progress added to the boil for 10 mins.
Into sink of cold water & ice - down to 40 degrees.
Into FV and topped up to 10L,thrashed and Safale 04 added.
OG 1.047
We'll see what comes out the other end!![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

Re: jimw86,s out of date Brew Buddy Bitter kit club
Hi all, I have finally found time to try this free brew can kit. I am attempting to turn my into a Brown Ale bitter recipe. Here is the plan:
250 Grams of Chocolate malt
250 Grams of Crystal malt.
Steeped in 11 liters of water 30 mins at 70c.
Bring to boil:
Take off heat and add 1 kg amber DME.
Bring to boil, after hot break, add hops as follows:
25 grams Challenger hops (20 mins for flavouring)
20 grams East Kent goldings (2 mins for Aroma)
Turn off heat. Add Brew Buddy can, and rapid cool in sink. Add 10 litres of cold water and ferment with coopers yeast. 2 weeks later prime and bottle.
Any suggestions welcome! I don’t know exactly how to create recipes and want to know if I have made any fundamental flaws….
Cheers![Razz :=P](./images/smilies/icon_razz.gif)

Re: jimw86,s out of date Brew Buddy Bitter kit club
This is the latest (and last). Using Dave Line's book I've approximated the Fuller's ESB recipe in the opening chapter and using mostly leftover bits and pieces.
Steep
4 litres campden treated water
30 mins @ 80C
180g crystal malt
20g roasted barley (for colour reasons)
Boil
35 mins
12.5g mixed hops (fuggles and EKG) @ 35
1kg (mostly) dark soft sugar @ 35
300g dark DME @ 35
12.5g mixed hops (fuggles and EKG) @ 10
Irish moss @ 10
and finally 1 can Brewbuddy Bitter poured directly into fv
OG 1.046
FG 1.010
The colour is at the dark end of tawny but I can't put a figure on it as I'm using someone else's computer and haven't got my EBC bookmark!
I bottled this on 7/5/10 but am already drinking it - s'lovely
There is a very slight lack of body due to the fact that 1kg of the fermentables are sugar, but this is made up for by a wonderful fruitcakey hop character. This actually the most perfectly balance hop character of all the kits I've modded - I'm not really sure how I achieved that! There's also a sweet maltyness to it (probably from the crystal). It's obviously turned out more with more hop flavour than the original ESB but drinking it alongside, some of the flavours are not far off if I may say so myself. The colour seems pretty faithful too, perhaps just a shade under Fuller's. ABV is around 4.8% so not quite up with Fuller's, but yeah I'm really pleased with this one. Cheers!
