Re: Further stupid questions- Direct scorn this way.
Lager brewed with an ale yeast and a low (almost ale) level of carbonation is a Kolsch. You have the lager kit, you have the ale yeast you have a pressure barrel, why not just make a kolsch, they're often very nice!

Re: Further stupid questions- Direct scorn this way.
Dave, i'm doing that then, right now as it happens. Bottled a gallon of TC, barrelled a batch of Ale, and just about to throw 2 lager kits and some light spraymalt in and see what I get, it'll go in a barrel when it's finished, so kolsch it is! Maybe it'll work better with 2 cans, maybe it wont, we'll soon find out!

Indeed so. fine pub. Right end of town, from that perspective, away from the dismal chav bars and nightclubs, and closer to the Yorkshire Terriers and Olde Starre Inns of this world.
Update on the toucan lager experiment. It's down to 1.010 ish, assuming my reading on a cheap hydrometer is right. Tastes alright out of the FV, can't imagine it'll drop any more, but will leave for a few days to finish properly. Little option really, as I've still got about a gallon of John Bull IPA in the barrel it's destined for.
I think it's going to turn out alright. Will bottle a few and carbonate as a lager, and barrel the rest as a Kolsch.
Tried a drop of the Wilko's own brand Hoppy bitter which has been in the barrel a few days, and it was a bit underwhelming. Drank it straight after a pint of the John Bull IPA though, which is quite bitter, so maybe the contrast made it seem more bland than it is.
In other news, my brother, who i gave the other Youngs Lager starter kit and some other bits to, has brewed it, bottled it, drank a bit, thought it was pretty good even flat from the fv, and will be planning his next brew now.
