Pellets are better for dry hopping IMO, but break down to a pulp, so are harder to filter out when bottling/kegging.

How were you planning to dry hop?

Ok ok I will. Cascade or citra? Both descriptions sound great but I can't decide!

Hahaha

To answer the question of hops I was going to just put them into the fermenter. I saw a vid on youtube where it was done, and then transfered to a second FV for bottling. Can it be done like that?

Sorry, I should have been a bit more specific with my question!

If using leaf hops, you can add them to a muslin bag along with something like sanitised shot glasses to weigh the hops down in your brew, because they will just float about on the surface.

Pellets give better results IMO, and will drop to the bottom of the FV with time, but I find that chilling my brew really helps to drop the hop trub out of suspension. Chilling an FV isn't that easy though, so wrapping some voile material around the end of your racking cane will help to filter most of the hop debris out when you transfer from one FV to another.

Cheers

Ok. Well had to go for leaf at 100g in the end. If it arrives Tuesday (day 9 - because of bank holiday) could I add them then? Muslin bag it is. Time to dig out the shooters! I guess it could just be a small glass to hold them down if need be!

Does 50 grams sound too much. Bout 2.3g a litre. Or should I go for 45 grams at 2 grams a litre?

Day 9 will be fine for dry hopping, and I would just go for a round 50g :)

You will need to boil your muslin bag for 10 mins to kill off any nasties that might harm your brew, and make sure that you sanitise whatever type of glass that you use to weigh the hops down with.

MB / WA thanks for the suggestions of hop shops. I went for Worcester in the end, ordered on Wednesday at 10pm, was waiting when I got Home.

However, finding it more difficult to get a muslin bag, would one of the lady's tights do? If I was to cut it and boil it?? No jokes :p

This brings me onto a final point. Any ideas for a different kit that would also complement citra? Hoppy copper, or something like that?

Thanks guys.

Manngold,
Glad to see that you are well and truly hooked on the Brewing thing! :D No going back now.
Tights would be OK if you are desperate! Don`t use the Bum End!
You might need to use two shot glasses to weigh down the Hops. Leave about 75mm headspace above the hops to allow them to
expand when soaking up the beer. Boil everything that is going in your FV, Tights, string, cable ties, etc. Tie the hop bag to the FV handle.
As you put the bag in the FV, just gently touch the FV bottom then come back up about 50mm, then tie off the bag. This will cause minimum
sediment disturbance when you gently remove the Hop Bag.
Look on the Hops Post, `Hoplist Has Launched`, you should find stuff on there to go with your Citra. :D

Thanks WA. Can I not just out the bag in and let it gloat around on the top? As it seems that would be what happens if I was to just put the leaf in.

From what you have said it seems like I don't want the hops to touch the wort, is that correct.

EDIT: If using a siphon to transfer to a second fv do I need to remove the bag first still?

Enjoying a couple of shop bought beers to get my bottle stock up!

Oh, and I am hooked. I blame you (and MB) for that, as does the wife and the bank card!

Hello Manngold,
1, Why would your bag gloat around the top? What is it looking at? Is it a `Superior Bag` that looks down on other bags?
2, Yes, the Hops have to touch the Beer! (or do you mean the muck on the FV bottom). Don`t touch the muck on the bottom. OoooH Errr Vicar!
3, Remove the Hop Bag one day before Bottling, give the bag a gentle squeeze to get the hop flavour out. (some people do, some don`t).

1. Yes it all gloats.
2. would just letting it float on top achieve this? I guess this is fairly easy, just dont want to muck it up.
3. When I squeeze, I will of course wash my hands prior, but do I need to sanitize them as well.

Thanks WA. Your mango TC sounds great btw!

Manngold,
I wouldn`t let it float on the top just in case of any nasties or infections.
Wash your hands prior to squeeze but rinse them very, very thoroughly. Other people may take umbrage with this squeeze thing, but I do it,
It works OK for me. OK, I`ve only been Brewing for 17 months but you get a feel for things that work or don`t work! We are all learning!
Glad I answered this now because my `Shine On` Hops gotta be squeezed and taken out! :D
Was In IKEA today (as you do on Bank Holiday Weekends) and I bought some Lollipop Moulds for the Freezer, Some of the TC will go in those
just to calm down the noisy, whiney, grizzling kids at future BBQs. The parents will be wondering why their kids are sleeping or falling down drunk! :D =D>

Loving your lollipop idea WA!

It reminds me of an orange vodka jelly that I made for my own house warming party back in 2000. It was made with a litre of pure Smirnoff and loads of jelly to help it set.

It wiped out half of the guests, including myself

Cheers
