It's surprising how often you read something and think "That's a good question", or just have a look around and find questions answered you hadn't even thought to ask yet!

First brew is now sitting in the garage after a week in the kitchen. I'm impatient and have already tried a couple of small bottles and drawn a little off the keg (i've done half & half). Still far too young but hoping it'll improve with a little more age!

Hey...I have about 10 bottles left.

Mainly cos I've been drinking my lager.

Hi EB,

How did your Wilko's Golden Lager turn out in the end? I am interested in brewing a keg version of this. How long until it was in a 'good' drinkable condition? If you were to do it again, would you change anything?

Thanks

I brewed the Wilko Golden Lager up with a kilo of brewing sugar and a jar of honey.

After about 4 weeks in the bottle it was eminently drinkable.

Very enjoyable in fact. Would do it again to the same recipe.

Can't speak for doing it in a keg...

Thanks Eb. Was it the golden lager or ale pack? did you use 500grams of honey (or there abouts?)

Got my Dark Galleon bottled up this lunchtime-ish. Bit of a panic over not being able to find my steriliser. Sent the wife to the shops while I washed my bottles out. Then I found it just before she got back. Oooops!

Took the opportunity to brew up and selected Geordie Yorkshire Bitter from my kit collection. Truth be told, I was going to do the Winter Warmer and try and hang onto it (or at least some of it) for Christmas but someone at work is positively evangelical about the Geordie Bitter so am keen to try it...to be honest the reviews I've read online are somewhat less enthusiastic so I am keen to see what it's like for myself.

Brewed to what I imagine the kit instructions will be (does anyone actually read them after the first few goes? I guess I should really...) except for using Youngs BKE instead of sugar, and brewed short to 20 litres.

I'm off work for the next two weeks so might search out any jumble sales, boot fairs or eBay bargains for a keg or two before I jack the whole thing in due to HATING cleaning bottles :)

Popped into Boyes in Bradford. Gutted that they don't do home brew in that store (Brighouse, Ilkley and Skiptn apparently do). Cheered myself up by picking up two 2-can kits from Wilko for £25.50 the pair. A Wilko Goden ale an a Wilkk Best Bitter. Rude not to at that price, and I can feel a day trip to Ilkley coming on.

Beer, anyone?

Decided to try Brighouse. What a waste of time that was. They don't stock it at that branch ("I think Scarborough have it"—Gee, thanks).

I have it on good authority that they stock it in Ilkley. I'll try there next week.

In a bad mood now. At least I've got 2!

I found myself in Boyes Ilkley yesterday. Bit diaappointed, truth be told. They had lots of hits of gear, but nowhere near a cheap as I've been led to believe. The best value bit was probably an Edme kit that was a bit dented so reduced to £7.50 (normal price £15 I think). Everything else full price: 2-can kits north of £20; FV was £13 I think; pressure barrel over £30. On the plus side they have lots of bits and pieces Wilko don't sell: two varieties of hops: (East Kent Goldings and one other), maybe three yeasts, VWP...

I won't be rushing back unless:

A) the LHBS is shut, and
B) Wilko is shut and/or does not stick the item, and
C) I'm in a rush.

I'll pop back to Wilko today since I help back on Saturday in anticipation of the wonders of Boyes!

If anyone is considering going, there's actually only one Boyes in West Yorkshire that does it, which is Ilkley. Bradford and Brighouse don't, so don't waste a trip and it might be worth a telephone call before you set off to se what they've got in.

Cheers!
