I used a pound (454g) of Blackstrap molasses in a Porter recipe (based around a John Bull kit). The only thing I could taste in the brew was molasses. Next time I'll keep to about 100g, the flavour just obliterates everything else and never mellowed. Even chilling it to the point that my tongue went numb while drinking could not dull the flavour. About the only thing in favour of that brew was that was the colour; it was so black it made Guinness look like a lager shandy. It looked great, but as Ditch has often remarked; we don't drink with our eyes.

It took me over a year to force myself to drink it all, but I just could not bring myself to throw it away.

Happy brewing,

Ian.

Ha, your a braver man than I am. I was that mad at myself for putting in 750g, I just knew it was going to get worse over time. It got to point where I couldn't even store them, as I knew, when I tasted a bottle, it would be sooo bad. A Molasses ale is not for the faint hearted.

I bottled a Coopers ESB taken from the Coopers website last night which includes 200g of molasses. I'll repeat back in due time.

A little taster whilst bottling didn't show any signs of strong molasses flavour so hopefully it'll be fine.
